Panama Canal Timeline

    First event

    Charles V wanted to cut a piece of land from Panama. The plan was made in 1529. “The Mediterranean Sea put the project on hold”.(Marinesight.com)

    France attempted to build the panama canal but failed.They had many sicknesses. Also lots of their people died

    Columbia would not allow America to build a Canal. Panama “broke away” from columbia with America’s support. America made a deal with Panama to build the canal.

    This is the year that the panama canal was started. President Theodore D Roosevelt wanted a way to pass goods from Atlantic to pacific coasts. He ended up with the Panama canal.The initial cost was 10 million dollars from the US to Panama. But soon they paid repeated payments.

    The canal was decided to be a lock canal. They did that so ships could pass through it. This happened after one year of building.
