    In 1500s to the 1900s Spaniard Rodrigo de Bastidas Discovers Panama. Also in the 1500s the french began the canal project about their water way. They also stole panama from colombia because they thought that was their waterway.

    When it was built

    1903–1914 The official Panama Canal was built which means it took 11 years. It was built to connect the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. It was a 50-mile long passage that created an important shortcut for ships. It was 77 m long and artificial.

    The US got the Panama Canal from the French for $40 million. On November 3, 1903 because of the failure that the french could not uphold the build of the Panama Canal. So the US came in and took over, and look at it now it looks pretty good.

    Diseases and Accidents

    Between 1904 and 1913 over 5,600 workers died due to disease or accidents. Due to the making of the Panama Canal and some of the diseases such as Yellow Fever and Malaria.But some people also believe that it is caused because of the bad air they were breathing in.

    After a decade of construction, President Woodrow Wilson sent a signal from the White House to blow up the Gamboa Dike October 10, 1913(or at least around that time) . Which caused water to flow into the Panama Canal then the joining the Atlantic and Pacific oceans for the FIRST TIME. the event was celebrated around the world with everyone and The Times describing it as “too stupendous to be grasped by the most alert mind.”

    Aug. 3, 1914 marks the date that the S.S. Cristobal has just become the first passenger vessel to cross the whole entirety of the Panama Canal. But then once they finally knew the Panama Canal worked there was a severe drop in traffic along Chilean ports due to shifts in the maritime trade routes.

    In 1939, a new set of locks were planned in order to carry the larger U.S. warships through the canal and defend it so it's safe against enemies. However, the development was sadly canceled after the start of World War II. (which sucks because it was going to be used for enemy ships, the new locks)

    turnover of December 31, 1999 the US President Jimmy Carter gave the Panamanian the Panama Canal back. Because President Theodore Roosevelt had supported the cause of Panamanian independence with the Canal in mind. He decided to give it back but he died so President Jimmy Carter decided to give it back in his honour.

    $5 billion Panama Canal expansion was in 2006. And they decided to expand it because ships continue to rub against the canal's walls and wear out our defenses designed to protect both shipping and the waterway. So that more ships are able to get through so we can receive more goods.

    August 15, 2014, marks the 100th anniversary of the official opening of the Panama Canal. And when it was first built it cost 10M dollard to make but trust me they got it back. Because one year they made 2.4 billion USD which makes the Panama Canal have a 1.26 billion USD net income.
