Panama was a province of columbia. Rooseevelt offferd ten million in cash and 250,000 yearly rent to allow the United states to build a cannel through panama, but the Province of columbia rejected this offer. -
Americas Help
After the Province of Columbia rejected Roosevelt offer he offered to help the panamas revlot and become independent. The revolt took place U.S gunboats waited in the harbor to provide support for the rebals and claimed there independence and the U.S reconized the Republic of Panama. -
Americas Treaty with Panama
Panama signed a treaty giveing the United Sates permanent use and control of a ten mile-wide zone across the isthmus of panama for ten million U.S dollars and 250,000 yearly rent. This is known as the Hay-Bunau-Varilla Treaty of 1903. -
'Make the dirt fly'
Its been a little over a yaer now and the Panama cannel hasnt even started and president Roosevlt esablished the (ICC) Isthmian Canal Commission and see contruction of the panama canal. President Roosevlt urged them to make the dirt fly. -
Obstacles Faced
There were many obstacles that enginers and workers were faced with.Yellow fever and malraria were killing off there work force and scareing others from coming over to work.The tropical weather casued many issues also the rain and the sun. They also had to dig out a mountain adn there were many deaths. -

New head Enginerrs John Stevens arrives stressing sanitation. He also realizes the railroad thata over 60 years old and knows thats its starting to break down and without it there not able to move the dirt. -
Summary/Reflection
The panama canal was a major thing that changed history of america. It showed that america is not a weak country and we favored expansion. The canal changed traveling from the alantic to the pasific ocean and made over sea trades easier. -
