    Jan.22 1903: This is the day that the panama canal began with signing of the hay Herran treaty by the united states and colombia although they never ratified the treaty with giving up the control to isthmus of panama until the November of 1903.

    May.4 1904: After the U.S. purchased all remaining property from france which was tried and then later failed to actually build the canal. Later, President Theodore Roosevelt appointed Col. George Washington Goethals chief engineer, using his military background to help see the project (Building the panama canal) through to completion.

    Jan.7 1914: In this time there was an old french crane boat that reached the pacific ocean and became the first vessel to cross the panama canal. The boat/crane crossed over the final stages of building which would have been at the end of later that year.

    August.3 1914: This date was marked as the day that S.S. Cristobal became the first person to cross the panama canal because the boat/crane was self propelled.

    Jan.9 1964: Over the american occupation of the panama canal there were 6 deaths of students and 91 other people were injured.these violent riots were because people believed the canal took up space and was unuseful but sometimes others did not think so which started up another riot.

    Sept.7 1977: After a while the president and panama’s head of government that stated where panama would gain full control over the panama canal again. When they said they guaranteed they did but it only lasted until late December.

    December.31 1999: Panama nearly a century after the U.S. purchased it in 1903. At times, as many as 30,000 U.S. soldiers and civilians had lived in the former Canal Zone, which literally and figuratively divided the country.

    Oct. 22 2006: The first “fixing” of the waterway were it was opened and only 78% of the people approved of the modification so they made the people vote and there was a big win for the president because they eventually got to get “the chance of a lifetime” as the president said to the people.

    Sept.3 2007: After the planning for the big win or for the “expansion’’ of the canal started it was going viral to everyone that had not heard yet and everyone agreed they would get the job done. It is known today to be a shipping area for over 2,000 pound boats.

    December. 2008: A Russian warship sails through the Panama Canal for the first time since World War II. The canal was shut to the Soviet Union during the Cold War.
