  • First Sino-Japanese War

    Japan fought against Korean Rebels for the first part of the war, then eventually siezed control of Korea and went to war with China with almost all vessels in their Imperial Navy. They gained their first colony, Taiwan, as a result of the war.
  • Russo Japanese War

    The Japanese defeated the Russian imperial forces and emerged as the only industrial society in the Far East. Through their victory, however, the Russians did not pay for the Japanese losses during the war, which caused Japan to have a huge debt. After the war, they realized that they lacked raw materials, food and land as they believed that they were approaching their maximum density.
  • World War One

    Japan sided with the Allies (UK, France, Italy, US and Russia) during World War One. They gained Germany's possessions which included Shandong Peninsula of China, Qingdao port, the Mariana Islands, the Caroline Islands and the Marshall Islands. They also produced a lot of war material for the Allies which proved highly profitable.
  • Aftermath of World War One

    The Japanese regarded their participation in the war as a success. In other places, Japan was viewed with suspicion and/or hatred. The Chinese and Koreans would increase their resentment in the 1920s. Japan joined the League of Nations in 1920 and served as a permanent member in the council.     78,000 surrendered Filipino and American soldiers were forced to mrach 65 miles to their POW camp. Anyone who stopped marching was killed.

  • Battle of the Coral Sea

    First Naval Battle between US and Japan; lasted until 8th of May. First time in Pacific War where Imperial Navy and American navy fire ship to ship.
  • Battle of Midway

    The Americans intercept coded message about attacka nd are able to set up ambush with aircraft carriers. They sink all aircraft carriers that the Japanese sent: Akagi, Kaga, Hiryu and Soryu. The US take out the "cream" of the Japanese Navy and is the turning point in teh Pacific War. It ends on the 7th of June, 1942.
  • Guadalcanal Campaign

    Major battle, cost thousands of lives on both sides. Renamed Henderson Field after first marine aviator to die. Ended on February 9th, 1943. The Us intended the battle to take 3 weeks but it took much longer.
  • Hiroshima Bombing

  • Second Sino-Japanese War

    Trade with Japan became a major concern for FDR. In the summer of 1947, Japan moved forces into China and quickly captured most of the Chinese coast.
