The Great Depression caused steep declines in industrial output. Many people lost their jobs. By 1933, when the Great Depression reached its lowest point, around 15 million Americans were unemployed and nearly half the country’s banks had failed.

    The Stock Market Crash started October 29, 1929. It caused The Great Depression and the Global Economic Collapse. Like The Great Depression, the Stock Market Crash affected over 15 million people. Billions of dollars were lost, and the stock prices kept going up and down. Many stores and factories were shut down. The Stock Market crash ended in 1939.

    Hoover had a large reputation as a humanitarian in WW1 by leading hunger-relief efforts in Europe, and even became the head of the American Relief Administration. Herbert Hoover became 31st president during the dust bowl. He took office in 1929, the year the U.S. economy plummeted into the Great Depression. Hoover was blamed for terrible things that was going on at the time. In 1932, Hoover was kicked out of office, giving the job to Franklin Roosevelt.

    Throughout the book, there was many dust storms. They suffered from not having enough water to grow crops, and dust getting in their food and water. Billie Jo’s almost lost their family, animals, and crops because of the dust.

    The dust bowl period was between 1930-1936. The dust bowl was also known as “The Dirty Thirties”. The world was very dry causing many dust storms. High winds carries choking heavy dust through the region, from Texas to Nebraska. People, and livestock died, and crops failed to grow.

    After Hoover was kicked out of office, Franklin Roosevelt got elected in 1933. Franklin was the 32 President in office. Roosevelt won all his elections by a landslide. The president had Polio but hid it from the public. Franklin Roosevelt was the first sitting president to fly in a plane. He was assassinated on April 12th, 1945.

    In June, after a large dust storm, they finally get rain. There has not been rain in a very long time. The rain took stress off of everyone. The animals become healthy again, crops grow back, and everyone is happy.

    A house fire starts in Billie Jo’s house. When she tries to put it out, she spills a pail of kerosene on her pregnant mother, causing her mom 3rd degree burns all over her. Her mom and the baby suffer from the burns.

    After the fire, Billie Jo’s mother and baby, who still hasn't been born, suffer from terrible burns. After giving birth to the baby, both the new baby and the mother pass away.
