    The battle of Shiloh was one of the early engagements of the Civil War. It began when the Confederates launched a surprise attack on the Union in Tennessee. The Union's general was Ulysses Grant. The Confederates were unable to hold their position and were forced back. Both sides suffered large loses, with more then 23,000 casualties. the reason why Shiloh is a significant battle is because is was one of the first battles of the war, and the first battle with so many casualties.

    The battle of Antietam happened September 17, 1862, at Antietam creek. at the time the union's general was George McClellan. Robert E. Lee was the general for the confederate army. The outcome of the battle was critical for shaping america's future. To this day it is the deadliest one day battle in american military history.

    It was hard for Abraham Lincoln because he wanted the southerners to still be apart of america, however he did not morally agree with slavery. by mid-1862 thousands of slaves fled the south to join the invading north. Lincoln knew that he had to do what was right, on September 22 he issued a preliminary emancipation proclamation, declaring that on January 1, 1863 all slaves would be free. This was a huge turning point for the civil war.

    In the spring of 1862 until 1863, the union forced a campaign to take the confederate fort Vicksburg, Vicksburg was one of the most successful campaigns of the war. in the spring Vicksburg finally surrendered, leaving the union with a great success. this battle was important because now Union forces had complete control of the Mississippi River. Confederate forces in Arkansas, Louisiana, and Texas were now isolated from the rest of the South.

    The Battle of Gettysburg, in July 1863, was a Union success that stopped Robert E. Lee's (confederate general) second invasion of the North. More than 50,000 soldiers fell as casualties during the 3-day battle, making it the bloodiest battle of the American Civil War.

    resulting Battle of Appomattox Court House, (which lasted only a few hours,) effectively brought the excruciating four-year Civil War to an end.
