The stock market crashed in October 1929. It sent Wallstreet into a frenzy and millions of people went straight to the banks to withdraw money- too many people. Millions of investors were wiped out and employment was near impossible.

On November 1st, 1929, the Great Depression began. Millions of people lost their jobs and the United States was in an economic crisis. This lasted for about 43 months, until March of 1933. This is around the time John Steinbeck began writing "Of Mice and Men" and this was even the setting/time period of the book.

Following a severe drought that hit the midwest and Southern Great Plains in 1930, The Dustbowl began in 1931. It was a series of dust storms that severely damaged ecology and agriculture. Heightening the already horrendous economic crisis during The Great Depression. It lasted a decade.
