    Early Development

    Yaroslav-the-wise

    Yaroslav-the-wise granted Novgorod its independence on Kiev and the rights to being a free city.

    Education Development

    Yaroslav-the-wise founded a school for 300 people. This school helped with universal literacy in the local population. This helped connect the city and country areas to communicate about economic matters, and political and military reports.

    Political Development

    Novgorod's government was a feudal republic. It was governed by a veche, which was a people's assembly. The assembly elected a prince to serve as the city's miitary leader. The most important offical was the posadnik, who was elected from the aristocracy families to be the cheif administrative official. The second highest official was the tysiatskii. An Archbishop was also elected and held power with the posadnik and the tysiatskii.

    Trade

    Beginning around the thirteenth century, Novgorod became a main trading post in Russia. The city built it's wealth from trade. It manufactured goods such as leather, metal jewelry, and wood products for export. It imported metals such as iron, copper, tin, and lead. It also imported wool, linen, silk, needles, glassware, and salt from the Northern Sea route.

    Invasions

    German crusaders and Danish and Swedish feudal lords invaded Novgorod. After a series of wars, they were unsuccessful and were driven out.

    Moscow Interference

    The grand prince of Vladimir and Moscow, Vasilii 1, tried to establish direct Moscow administration in Novgorod territory but was not successful in the attempt.

    Treaty of Lazhelbitsy

    After the defeat by Moscow, Novgorod was forced to sign the Treaty of Lazhelbitsy. The treaty handed power and foreign relations over to Moscow.

    Moscow Invasion

    The Novgorod army was unable to fight off the Moscow invasion because of class conflicts and unrests. The Moscows took control.

    End of the City

    Novgorod was annexed by Moscow in 1478.
  • City Establishment

    The city of Novgorod was established during the year 859.
  • Vladimir

    Vladimir was elected the posadnik, which was the govenor, of Novgorod. He later became the Prince of Kiev.
  • Foundation

    In the early tenth century, the war campaigns of the Nogorodians against Constantinople for equal trade with Bizantine resulted in the combining of East Slavic tribes into the Kievan Russian state.
