Eliezer is curious about his Jewish faith. He urges his father to teach him Jewish mysticism. However, he declines, saying he is too young. Eliezer finds Moshe the Beadle who becomes his Rabbi.

Jew’s rights were restricted, they were no longer allowed to frequent restaurants or cafés, they were not allowed to travel by rail, or to attend synagogues, or to be on the street after 6 o’clock. They were also forced to wear a yellow star on their clothing so others knew they were Jewish.

The Hungarian government sent for all foreign Jews. They were deported to Nazi-held Poland. However on the way, the SS murder them. Moche was able to escape and return to Sighet to tell his story, but no one believed him.

Eliezer celebrated his Bar Mitzvah and continued to study the Bible and other Jewish books.

Jewish homes were raided and they were forced into the ghettos.

Sighet becomes occupied. Jews were forced to wear stars. Soon, their businesses were shut down.

Eliezer’s father learns that all the Jews Will be transported to a concentration camp. They are expelled from the ghettos and forced onto cattle cars by the hundreds.

On the train ride to Auschwitz, Madame Sachtcher has an episode in which she can see fire when there was none. Once they arrive at Auschwitz, Eliezer and his father lie about their ages in order to survive.

Eliezer did not fast on Yom Kippur, because he was beginning to rebel against and not believe in God. He also believed that not eating anything at this point would kill him.

Eliezer’s foot becomes infected and he undergoes surgery on it.

For seven months, Eliezer and his father worked in the concentration camps of Auschwitz and Buna. There, they endured and witnessed many terrible crimes against humanity.

Germans evacuate Buna after hearing news of the approach of Russians army’s and that they were on their way.

when they evacuated the camp they forced the prisoners on a 50 mile death march to Buchenwald. In the beginning there were 20,000 prisoners and at the end only 6000 survived.

Eliezer’s father passes away because of the dysentery, starvation, and exhaustion. Eliezer begins to feel guilty because a sigh of relief came across him when his father passed away.

Eliezer is liberated and sent to France where he begins his recovery process.
