    The French and the Canal
    The French began to build a canal accross Columbia called the Panama Canal. This canal would connect the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans making it an ideal trading post. The French brought the usefullness of a canal that conected the two most major oceans to the attention of the US. The US goverment also realized that this canal could be used to their advantage in times of war. This canal would allow the US to shift their navy from the Atlantic to Pacific with ease.

    The French try to build a canal through Panama but harsh terrain and jungles get in their way. Malaria was killing most men and medical care wasn't sufficient. They dug through jungles and mud but their progress wasn't improving. They final were forced to stop and sell the canal to the US when so many of there workers fell ill that there were almost no one to work on the canal

    America convinced the people of Panama to revolt against the Columbian goverment. The US covinced the Panamanians by offering to help them with there navy.

    The French who were halfway through their journey, were forced to give up and sell it to America for 40 million dollars because of the sickness of the jungle that killed hundreds of there workers.(malaria caused by mosquitos carrying diseases)
