In 1948 a new government came into power and only whites could vote. With a new government came new laws called apartheid.

In 1953, apartheid laws meant that many blacks and non-whites had to abandon their dreams. Africans were not allowed to continue school, so they could not work for the government.

Nelson Mandela did non-violent protest until he realized that they didn't work and so he started to use violence.

Once he was captured and sentenced, in 1962, for 5 years in prison he was presented to horrifying conditions. It was very cold, but even then, they made him wear very little clothing.
