    Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela was born July 18, 1918 Mveso, Transkei, South Arfrica. Mandela's Father had four wives and thirteen children including him. Nelson Mandela has three full sisters, three-half brothers and six-half sisters. At the age of nine Nelson Mandela's father had died from lung disease and Mandela was adopted by Chief Jongintaba Dalindyebo. This event is significant because Nelson Mandela would become president of South Africa in 1994 and he would end apartheid (Biography.com)

    Nelson Mandela Join the African National Congress in 1942. Mandela became one of the leaders of the ANC in its fight against apartheid. In 1970s Mandela converted many black nationalist prisoners to the nonracial philosophy of the ANC. This is significant because in 1991 Mandela was elected president of the ANC.

    Mandela and 51 others started a campaign by breaking a curfew. May 1961 Mandela organized a campaign of strikes and civil disobedience. He created a scheme know as the " M Plan." These events are significants because they lead up to ending of apartheid.

    Death of Emmett Till
    On August 24, 1955 Emmett Till and a group of teenagers had entered Byrant's Grocery Store and Meat Market. Till had purchsed bubble gum. Later, on that day the group of teenagers had reported Emmett Till had whistled at, flirted with the store owner's wife- Carolyn Byrant. Four days later at approximately 2:30 AM Roy Byrant and his half brother had kidnapped Till, brutally beated him and dumped his body in the Tallahatchie River.
    This is significant because it emerged the Civil Rights Movement
  • Rosa Parks Refusal

    Rosa Parks Refusal
    After a long day at work, Rosa parks had boarded the Cleveland Avenue bus to go home. She took a seat in the first several rows assigned for blacks. Bus drivers had adopted the custom of requiring black passengers to give up their seat for white passengers. The bus was full and it began to fill with white passengers. Three blacks gave up their seats and Rosa Parks refused. The bus driver called the police and had her arrested.
    This is significant because it spurred the Montgomery boycott

    Barack Obama was born on August 4, 1961, in Honolulu, Hawaii. As a child, Obama did not have a relationship with his father. Obama's parents officially separated several months later and divorced in March 1964. This event is significant because Barack Obama is the 44th and current president of the United States, and the first African American to serve as U.S. president. First elected to the presidency in 2008, he won a second term in 2012.

    On October 1963, Mandela and others began the Rivonia Trial- a campaign of guerrilla warfare and terrorism. Eleven months later, Mandela, Sisulu, and five others were convicted of sabotage and sedition. Mandela became the leader of the prisoners in Robben Island. Robben Island soon became known as “Mandela University.” This is significant because Mandela actions landed him in prison for nearly three decades.

    Death of Martin Luther King Jr.
    Standing on the balcony outside his room at Lorraine Motel, Martin Luther King Jr was struck by a sniper's bullet. The shooter was James Earl Ray. James Earl Ray had pleaded guilty for the murder of Martin Luther King. He was sentenced 99 years in prison. Ray had died in prison on April 23,1998. This event is significant because the murder had sparked riots and demonstrations in more than 100 cities across the countries

    Nelson Mandela and Frederik Willem de Klerk ended apartheid. They won the Nobel Peace Prize December 10, 1993 for their work of the peaceful termination of apartheid. They had set up a government that represent all South Africans. This event is significant because Nelson Mandela and Frederik Willem de Klerk ended apartheid.

    Mandela was sworn in as the first black president of South African, with De Klerk serving as his first deputy. Mandela established the Truth and Reconciliation Commission to investigate human rights. Mandela established a strong central government based on majority rule and prohibited discrimination against everyone.     “No one is born hating another person because of the color of his skin, or his background, or his religion. People must learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate, they can be taught to love, for love comes more naturally to the human heart than its opposite.” This is one famous quote from Nelson Mandela’s autobiography “Long Walk to Freedom”, which he wrote most of in prison. The following year he was awarded the Order of Merit. This is significant because Mandela published numerous books.

    Never Forgot 9/11
    On September 11, 2001 Islamic extremist group al-Qaeda hijacked four airliners. Two of the planes were flown into the Twin Towers in New York City, a third plane hit the Pentagon just outside Washington, D.C., and the fourth plane crashed in a field in Pennsylvania. Over 3,000 people were killed. This event is signifant because it will never be forgotten. Construction workers built the World Trade Center in New York replacing the Twin Towers and rebuilt the Pentagon.

July 18 has been said to be Mandela Day, but South Africans embrace the chance to celebrate Nelson Mandela's life for the whole of July. It was also to promote global peace and celebrate the South African leader's legacy. This event is significant because it gives South Africans the power to change the world around them.

Mandela is most known for writing the book, “Long Walk to Freedom”, the time he spent in prison and his contributions in South Africa. This event is significant because Mandela will never be forgotten. Nelson Mandela had fought for social justice for 67 years. We celebrate him for 67 minutes.

    Trayvon Martin was born in Florida on February 5, 1995. He was shot and killed by neighborhood watch member George Zimmerman on February 26, 2012, in Sanford, Florida. Zimmerman and Martin engaged in a physical fight. The confrontation ended with Zimmerman shooting the Trayvon Martin. This is significant because it sparked national controversy.
