    Nelson Mandela is born on July 18th in the Village of Mvezo. He is named Rolihlahla "Trouble Maker". He is part of the Xhosa tribe.
  • Small Child

    As a small child, Nelson Mandela is happy in the Village of Qunu. He swims in the rivers, herd sheep and steals honey from beehives. He also plays stick fighting with his friends. His father taught him to be brave and his mother thought him to be kind.

    At 7 years old, Nelson Mandela goes to a mission school. It is small school with only one classroom. He is renamed Nelson by his teacher. Every kid receives a English name.

    His father died when he is 9 years old. Mandela goes to live with his uncle: chief of Jonghi. Chief Jonghi is an important man. He is the king of a tribe. He lives in a very big house and has a car. This is very rare at the time. Uncle Jonghi's son, Justice, becomes Nelson's best friend.

    Nelson goes to middle school (Clackebury Boarding School) and high school (Fort Beaufort) for Africans only. It is very rare for Africans to finish high school but his Uncle Jonghi thinks education is really important. Nelson attends school with his friend Justice.

    Uncle Jonghi wants Nelson Mandela and Justice to marry and he choose a wife for them. They run away to Johannesburg with his friend Justice. Johannesburg is the capital of South Africa. It is a big and rich city with many gold mines. Most black people live in township. Township do not have running, water or electricity. The road are only made of dirt and dust. Nelson Mandela lives in township called Alexandra.

    Nelson Mandela joins the ANC (African National Congress) . He helps create the youth league. The youth league plans to organize peaceful protest against discrimination and segregation.

    In Johannesburg , Nelson Mandela becomes friend with Walter Sisulu. At the Sisulu's he meets his first wife (Elelyn Mase, a nurse) which whom he has 4 children (3 survives).

    At the Sisulu's, he also meet Oliver Tambo. After studying at night to become lawyer, he opens with Oliver Tambo the first black law firm in South Africa: Mandela and Tambo. As a lawyer, he defends black people are in trouble with the law. Many black people are in trouble with the law because there are many unfair laws.
