  • Nelson Mandela Is Born

    Nelson Mandela was born on July 18, 1918 in Qunu, South Africa. Originally named Rolihlahla, Nelson was from a family of nine with a mother by the name of Noqaphia Nosekeni and a father by the name of Gadla Henry Mphakanyiswa. He also had five sisters by the names of Lieby, Nothusile, Mabel, Baliwe, Constance and a brother called Mhlalwa. This event is significant because Nelson Mandela becomes a very successful man and also becomes president. (Meer 3-4)
  • Treaty of Versailles Signed

    In 1919 the Treaty of Versailles was signed ending World War I. The treaty listed that Germany be stripped of its' colonies, its' armed forces reduced and certain weapons that the army used prohibited. This event was significant because it gave Germany less power and the other countries new colonies. It also ended a war that was going on for a while. ("Treaty of Versailles 2015")
  • Went to a Christian Primary School

    In 1930, Nelson went to a christian primary school after his father passed away when he was about 12. He was given the name Nelson by his teacher, Miss Mdingane, because it was a custom that all of the school children should be given christian names. This event is significant because the name Nelson is the name that he used from then on and that's the name that we remember him by. ("Biography of Nelson Mandela 2015")
  • First FIFA

    In 1930 the first Fifa was created. It took place in Uruguay because they had a gold medal in soccer from the olympics. Many European teams signed up but only four teams actually went to the Fifa making the european countries a little dissapointed. This event was significant because this brought some countries together over the love of soccer and this was something fun that the people can watch and men can paricipate in.   • Hitler becomes President

    In 1934 Hitler becomes President of Germany. He was first chancello, but when the president died, he urged the Nazis to elect him as president and they did. He also had control over the army. This event was significant because this was the start of a terrible time for the jewish people living in Germany. Many were killed by him because of who they were and how they looked.   • World War II Begins

    In 1939 World War II began. It started with Hitlers want for world domination. He invaded Poland which caused Great Britain and France to declare war on Germany. This was the start of the war. This event was significant because it caused the world to go through a tough time. Land was destroyed and lives were lost. It was all because of Hitler and his want for world domination.   • Nelson studies Law

    In 1943 Nelson studied law at the University of Fort Hare. He was later expelled for joining a student protest and went to a different university called the University of Witwatersrand. He left that university and returned to Fort Hare to recieve his diploma. This event is significant because if he didn't study law, he wouldn't be able to fight for his peoples rights an that was his goal. ("Nelson Mandela-Biographical 1993")
  • Nelson Mandela Arrested

    In 1962 Nelson Mandela was arrested and sentenced to five years in prison. While in prison, he was sentencd to life in prison along with members of the African National Congress. They were all charged with treason. This event was significant because while Nelson was in prison, his reputation grew and he became the most significant leader of South Africa.   • Rivonia Trial

    In 1963 Nelson Mandela and the other members of the ANC attended the RivoniaTrial. Known as the trial that changed South Africa, the men were put on trial with no lawers and they all plead not guilty and ended up serving two decades in prison. Eventually everyone was released except for Nelson.
    This event was significant because this happend right before he became president of South Africa and it showed how the judges treated the people of the ANC while in prison.

  • Trademark for ANC

    In 1963 Nelson Mandelas action became the trademark for the ANC. After the Rivonia trial, Mandela led a group of defendants to the court steps and saluted with a clenched fist screaming power and the defendants would scream it shall be ours. This event was significant because it showed how many supporters he had even though he was in prison and it showed that even though he was in prison, he was still fighting for his people.   • Noble Prize

    In 1993 Nelson Mandela and South African president FW de Klerk won the noble peace prize. They together laid down the foundation for a new democratic South Africa that included Mandelas people. They also noticed how unfair Mandelas people were being treated and vowed not to let that happen again. This event is significant because Mandela got what he wanted for his people.   • President of South Africa

    In 1994 Nelson Mandela became the president of South Africa and of the ANC. He was the first black president and he was also the first democratic president. sadly he only served one term but in that one term he made sure that everyone was treated equally. This event was signifcant because this was a major change in South Africa and a major acomplishment for Nelson Mandela and his people. (Linder 2010)
  • Nelson Mandela Childrens Fund

    In 1995 Nelson Mandela created the Nelson Mandelas Childrens Fund. He created this fund to try to change the way the society treats the children and to help shape the chidrens lives. This event was significant because it helpd the children of South Africa create a stable life for themselves and it also helped them feel accepted by the society. (Biography of Nelson Mandela 2015)
  • 9/11

    In 2001, four aircrafts were hijacked by islamic extremists and three out of the four hit their targets in New York and Washington D.C. Two of the airplanes hit the two towers of the World Trade Center, one hit the Pentagon and the last one landed in a field in Pennsilvania. Many people died in this tragic event. This event was significant because it effected the people of New York and the world. Many people died from the airplanes and from saving others.

  • Boston Bombing

    In 2013 at the Boston Marathon, two pressure cookers were placed near the finish line and as people ran by, they exploded. Three people died and many were wounded. The men who set the bombs were caught. One was killed in a shoot out and the other is in prison. This event was significant because it devastated many people and Boston had support from other countries after this tragic and unexpected event.

  • Nelson Mandela Dies

    On December 5, 2013, Nelson Mandela died of a respiratory infection. He was already diagnosed with tuberculosis so it wasn't much longer until it cought up with him. Although he died on this day, he is never forgotten epecially in South Africa. This event is significant because Nelson has done many things that has helped his people and before he died, he could've been able to say that he has acomplished his life long goal.
