Nelson Mandela was born. Rolihlahla is his tribal name. In Xhosa, the language of his parents, his name means"one who brings trouble on himself."(D.S. 1, 13). He was born in a tiny village called Mvezo in South Africa ("A Rural Childhood").

Mandela's father died. Before his father died, his dad put Nelson in his brother's care (DS I, 15).

Mandela enrolled at Fort Hare College, one of the few universities in South Africa that allowed full-time black students. He was interested in politiics and current affairs and thought he might become a lawyer (DS1, 34).

Mandela began to attend the ANC meetings, and in the year, Mandela recieved his College Degree (DSII,9).

In 1962, Mandela was captured and sentenced to 5 years in prison. Conditions were terrible. Despite the intense winter cold, blakc prosioners were clothed in just a shirt, shorts, and sandals year-round (DS II, 5).

In October, 1963, Mandela was charged with sabotage, This new charge came after he had already been charged, convicted, and sentenced to five years in prison for leaving the country illegally. Thus, The Rivonia trial began (DS II, 11).

The trial, which soon became known as the Rivonia Trial, began in October 1963 ("The Rivonia Trial").

Mandela had a pleasant meeting with the South African President P.W Botha. Social unrest were taking toll (DSII,15).

At this time, Mandela was waiting for his friend, and mentor Walter Sisulu was released from prison (DSII,10).

On Sunday February 11,1990 at 4:15 pm Nelson Mandela was released from prison for the first time in 10,000 days. He was 71 years old (DS1, 21).

Both Mandel and President de Klerk were awarded the Nobel PRize for Peace in 1993. Standing together at the ceremony in Oslo, Norway, Mandela applauded de Klerk's efforts as a true partner in he(DS II, 2).

On May 2, 1994, Mandela won the election and became the first black president of South Africa (DS II, 24).

After turning 80 and remarrying, he decided, however, to retire and spend more time in his rural home with his grandchildren (DS I, 36).
