    Creation of Phoenix Junior College
    Created to provide higher education to broader community. Originally courses were taught in three buildings. Nine subjects were taught including Home Economics, Mathematics, English and Chemistry.
  • 1930s - Growth of Community Colleges around the nation

    During the Great Depression community colleges were instrumental in developing job training and bringing some relief to unemployment

    Works Progress Administration Funds were allocated for the construction of the new site at 15th Ave and Thomas

    Maricopa Junior College District
    The citizens of Maricopa county voted to create the community college system. Phoenix Junior College was voted into the jurisdiction by the Phoenix Union High School district. Glendale and Mesa campuses were designated as extensions of Phoenix Junior College.

    Enrollments almost double during 1970s for three reasons: Baby Boomers continue to come of age and desire post secondary education, parents want higher education for their children, and students enrolled in college to defer the draft during the Vietnam War
