    There have been many events that caused the Vietnam War to be as powerful as it was.
  • Beginning of the War

    Beginning of the War
    There was no fixed beginning of the Vietnam War but it happened in two series of steps in 1950
  • Geneva Conference

    Geneva Conference
    This conference was when Vietnam was guranteed its independence. It would be divided, and North would be led by Ho Chi Minh while the South would be controlled by Pro-Western Government whose leader was Diem. The United States didn't agree with this though so they didn't sign the accord.
  • Credibility Gap

    Credibility Gap
    Credibility gaps emerge during the war when it has been going on for a long time. It’s not likely that a general is going to be fired or that a policy is going to be changed. People start thinking that it isn't ever going to change or be done so they have to be reminded that it will be.
  • The Overthrow of Diem

    The Overthrow of Diem
    South Vietnam's President, Diem, was overthrown. He began to become more and more unliked and unpopular when he discriminated against Buddhism. He was overthrown by the military and then he was also later killed.
  • Tonkin Resolution

    Tonkin Resolution
    The North Vietnamese torpedoed boats in the Gulf of Tonkin because they have an idea that the United States were giving south Vietnamese information. The United States didn't waste any time and advised immediate air attacks on Noth Vietnamese.
  • Operation Rolling Thunder

    Operation Rolling Thunder
    Americans sustained the bombing campaign against North Vietnam. This lasted until October of the year 1968. During the Roll of Thunder 643,000bombs were dropped and 900 US aircraftswere lost.OPe
  • Anti-War Teach In

    Anti-War Teach In
    Teachers and Students Of University of Michigan came together and talked about the issues pertaining the war and why they didn't like it. Two months later, in May 122 colleges now held National Teach Ins.
  • Operation Masher

    Operation Masher
    This operation was a search and destroy mission. It was a goal to drive North Vietnam out of the province and destroy ther supplies. When the operation was finally over there were 2,385 enemy deaths
  • Operation Cedar Falls

    Operation Cedar Falls
    This was the largest American ground operating during the Vietnam War. It was launched to destroy the Iron Triangle because it was a Viet Cong stronghold which was later said to be a success.
  • The United States getting involved

    The United States getting involved
    There were 500,000 United State troops sent to Vietnam at this time and over 9,000 of them were killed and or injured.
  • Tet Offensive

    Tet Offensive
    The Tet Offensive was a series of surprise attacks with the North Vietnamese and Vietcong. It was also considered the turning point in the war.
  • Peace Talks

    Peace Talks
    Peace Talks take place in Paris between the North Vietnamese and the Americans. They were intended to bring peace to Vietnam and to end the war.
  • Vietnamization

    Vietnamization
    This was created to help South Vietnam to take more responsibility in the war. Nixon had a plan to make this policy work so he could start withdrawing troops from the war.
  • Kent State

    Kent State
    The Ohio National Guard soldiers fired on demonstrators without an order to do so. They filled 4 and wounded 9 others. This was all because Cambodian Invasion set off many protests.
  • 26th Amendment

    26th Amendment
    It changed the voting law from 21 to 18. Men thought that if they were old enought to fight in the war they should be able to vote for who was in control too. They also thought since they could get drafted then they should be able to chose who drafts them and who makes their decisions.
  • Pentagon Papers

    Pentagon Papers were given to New York Times and many other newspapers that revealed the Government lied about some of the operations which made civilians want to get out of the war even more and this caused a huge conflict.
  • U.S. Withdrawl of Troops

    When the United States withdrew from Vietnam and U.S. prisoners of war were released.
  • War Power Act

    War Power Act
    This event established limits on executive power and required the President to inform the Congress of commitments of the troops with in 48 hours. It then had to withdraw them in 60-90 days unless they approved their commitments.
  • The South Vietnam Surrendered

    The South Vietnam Surrendered
    Was when the peace agreement collapsed and the North Vietnamese Army set out a full scale invasion on the South. When the United States didn't come help in the peace treaty North Vietnam caught Saigon, the South's capital. Then the South surrendered and they reunite Vietnam. Then they renamed Saigon Ho Chi Minh City.
