  • Period: 500 to 1400

    Medieval Times

    The Medieval times had sacred and secular music, and this is the period where Solfege was created. The music during this time period was less vocal and instrumental and required more talking. One of the composers from this period is Guido De Arezzo, who was the composer who created Solfege. He created musical syllables to help singers remember melodies, which has evolved into Solfege.

    Renaissance Period

    The music during this time period was very sacred, and was more vocal and instrumental than the music during the Medieval period. The songs were also longer. One of the composers from this time period was Thomas Tallis, who was a teacher, organist, and composer. He wrote Spem in Alium, which required at least 40 voices.

    Baroque Period

    Baroque music was usually a melody with a bass line at the bottom. The music usually had one mood the entire song. One of the composers from this period is Georg Phillip Telemann. His mother didn't want him to become a musician, so he taught himself music. He composed over 3,000 compositions in all and was friends with Bach.

    The classical period was very elegant and had a lot of balance. It was mostly only instruments. One of the composers from this period is Ludwig Van Beethoven. He wrote works with a lot of emotion and power, and he wrote some of his greatest works while he was deaf.

    The Romantic Period music had a lot of emotion and passion. One of the composers from this time period is Pytor IIyich Tchaikovsky, who wrote the songs in the Nutcracker ballet. His works are very popular in art music.

    Modern Period

    The modern period has many different styles of music, such as classical, pop, country, rock, jazz, etc. One of the composers from this period is George Gershwin. His works can be found in movies such as Mr. Holland's Opus, When Harry Met Sally, and Fantasia 2000. His works combined elements of jazz with art music.
