    History of Music Consumption

    Juke Box
The juke box was an item which could be used by the public in social places without a high charge. You would insert a coin into the machine and then select a song from the implemented library and thats the song it will play. They were good because it meant that people in public were in control of what was played and what others listened to.
  • Vinyl

    Vinyl
This was a time where you could now collect music in your own home and play it as you saw fit. It was also a representation of your personality and meant that you could explore other genre's and artists that you weren't originally aware of. It was also good for social occasions and created a different atmosphere in the home.
  • MTV

    MTV
MTV was solely dedicated in the day to provide music on television for users to consume. Although they were based around the popular music and didn't dable in the different. MTV had a serious effect because of the way people can now listen to music on a different platform at home and other places.
  • iPod

    iPod
The creation of the iPod had a drastic effect on the world in the way we consume music and still does today. It was modern technology and made it simple of consumers to obtain music and listen to it whenever they saw fit, on the go, at work or at home. Joined with iTunes, the iPod offered a new dynamic and brought music consumption into the modern day.
  • The Pirate Bay

    The Pirate Bay
Pirate Bay has had a dramatic effect on music consumption since it's creation dabbling in the areas of piracy and torrenting. The site allows you to search a song or album and download it using UTorrent, an extracting software, for free. Of course this is going to have an effect because it means a loss of money for artists despite the fact that it still gains publicity. Its variety of domains means it's hard to shutdown and it shows how the internet can have a certain negative effect.
  • Facebook

    Facebook
Though it's not directly linked to consumption I still think it's relevant because it allows artists to get there music on social media where it can ultimately spread. Spotify is linked to it meaning people can see what your listening to, it for personalisation reasons but it is definitely relavant to consumption. Facebook being the largest social media site means that it has the greatest effect on the industry, for record signed artists and independent alike.
  • Youtube

    Youtube
The creation of Youtube has had a dramatic impact on the music industry and consumption. Almost every song worth listening to is on Youtube and all is required is internet connection. It creates a direct connection between the artist and consumer. People can now give their music to the world for free without the need of record labels and distributors. But it has opened up to piracy and gaining music for free.
  • Soundcloud

    Soundcloud
The creation of Soundcloud has a dramatic effect specifically for independent artists. It allows people without the back of a record label or agent to gain some popularity and maybe a small fanbase. It also links with social media aswell. It's different from Youtube because its specifically for music but its similar because its using online sources for consumption.
  • Spotify

    Spotify
Spotify is recent online streaming technology that is slowly gaining popularity as a free way of listening to music, much like radio in an essence except you select what you want to listen to. Spotify has an effect because of the free capabilities, where ever Spotify is available, so is free music.
