The teaher is aware of the different cultures, and acts on it, creating for the students an example of nondiscrimiation. Non biased teachers will teach the students to keep an open mind. • Insights: Diversity

    Insights: Diversity
Throughout this course I came to see how prized diversity is in multicultural education. Coming to realize how special diversity between cultures, and people is has really impacted me both personally and professionally. When I become a teacher, I want to pass this valuable lesson onto my students. Everywhere I go, I want to keep an open mind and encourage people in their differences
  • How can multicultural education affect broader social issues that impact our society?

How can multicultural education affect broader social issues that impact our society?
The video “A Class Divided” was a perfect example of this. Jane Elliot taught her students how hateful discrimination was, and it was a lesson the children never forgot. Many years later, these kids recalled the lesson they learned. They were so passionate about non-discrimination, and will in turn, teach their children the same lesson. Though it is a slow process, acceptance of diversity will spread. Hopefully, one student at a time, prejudice and stereotypes will cease.
  • Definitons: Refined - Culture

    Definitons: Refined - Culture
Culture: Culture consists of many things. These can be the language, holidays, clothing, food and geographical location of people who live differently than I do. Yet culture is not just the material differences. Culture is also how they speak, think, feel and exist. Culture defines a person’s background, customs, and shapes who they are.

  • The Giver

    The Giver
This book was an excellent book, and one that I would want my students to read as well. It details out a world where there is no diversity, and instead only "sameness".

    Insights: Final Definitons
From the beginning of the semester, to now, at the end of the course, my understanding for both of these terms has changed so much. What I originally had to look up in the dictionary to describe, I can now detail out in great length. I have learned how intricate and involved multicultural education and culture really is. There are so many facets that it involves both these definitions, and I feel like I have a much clearer picture and deeper understanding of what these terms mean.
  • Poem: "The Differences In Diversity"

    Poem: "The Differences In Diversity"
I chose this poem because I like the message. We prize snowflakes, which are all one kind “snowflakes” yet there is not one that is alike. We as humans are exactly the same way (all human, and each one unique), but yet we still look down upon others who are “different.” My journey throughout this course was really centered on celebrating diversity, and discovering the excitement I felt for a culturally diverse classroom.
