    Simon Bolivar started the battle of independence for Venezuela. Native- born Venezuelans took advantage of weakened Spain. Venezuela would become a republic protected by the Monroe Doctrine.

    This treaty was written to end the first Seminole War. It was negotiated by John Quincy Adams, and Louis de Onís of Spain gave Florida to the US. This treaty gave up American claim on Texas.

    The Monroe Doctrine was written by James Monroe. The Monroe Doctrine became the foundation of future foreign policy. It was a US policy that opposed European colonialism in America.

    Texas was an independent republic since 1836 and became a state in 1845. President Polk reaffirmed the Monroe Doctrine. There was question about the US southern border and this disagreement turned into a war.

    Cuba had gone trough the Ten Years' War to win independence from Spain. The US invested in Cuba's sugar industry. Spanish government tightened control and blew up the USS Main and US declared war.

    President Roosevelt made references to Congress about the Monroe Doctrine. He Claimed the US would serve as "International Police" for Latin American countries in trouble. Roosevelt helped pay debts of what is now Dominican Republic.
