Here are the steps on how mitosis works and the phases it goes through.
-
The first thing mitosis goes through is interphase. Interphase is when the cell grows and strands of DNA within the cell replicate and divide into 2.
-
Prophase is the next thing that happens in mitosis which means chromosomes come together into an x shape structure called chromatids and the cell nucleus begins to breakdown.
-
Metaphase is next which means structures called centrioles move to each side of the cell and the chromatids line up along a divided line.
-
Anaphase is the next thing and that means the spindle fibers pull the chromatids towards opposite sides as the cell begins to split.
-
Telophase is when the nuclear membranes form around the sets of chromatids
-
Lastly is Cytokinesis and that is when the rest of the cell divides.
