  • Outcome Based Principles

    ACGME and ABMS developed 6 core competencies for graduate medical education: Medical Knowledge (MK), Patient Care (PC), Interpersonal and Communication Skills (ICS), Practice-based learning and Improvement (PBLI), Professionalism (PROF), System-Based Practice (SBP)
  • Outcomes Project

    Changes in residency education based on competencies and improved assessments in performance and identifying outcomes to improve education. These changes would improve outcome measures for accreditation.
  • Milestones

    Challenges in implementing competencies for both curriculum development and assessment and the lack of a shared mental model resulted in the development of milestones. ACGME developed narratives that described educational trajectories through residency education.
  • Milestone Implementation

    The first milestones were implemented in 7 core specialties (emergency medicine, internal medicine, neurological surgery, orthopedic surgery, pediatrics, diagnostic radiology, and urology)
  • Milestone Implementation

    The remaining core disciplines and majority of subspecialties implemented their milestones.
  • Milestones

    Iterative reflection of the implementation of the milestones identified limitations of the original set of milestones. This reflection resulted in a revision which harmonized elements and simplified the complexity and increased the community engagement.
