    The Japanese Army invades Manchuria- ["Manchurian Incident"]
    Japan was lacking the land needed to feed its rising population and the raw materials and markets needed to power the Japanese economy. Japan saw the acquistition of Manchuria as a solution to these problems. In September 1931, a Japanese army stationed in Manchuria took matters into its own hands. Claiming that Chinese soldiers tried to blow up a railway line, they captured several cities in southern Manchuria. By Febuary 1932, the army had seized all of Manchuria.

    In october 1935, Mussolini invaded the independent African kingdom of Ethiopia. The Ethiopians resisted, but the large Italian army, using warplanes and poison gas, overpowered the Ethiopian forces. By May, 1936, Ethiopia's emperor fled to England and the capital, Addis Ababa, was in Italian hands.

    The Nationalist army took the Spanish capital of Madrid and ended the Spanish civil war between the Nationalists and the Republicans. Franco kept a firm control of the government after the war and ruled Spain until his death in 1975.

    Germany used a new form of attack on Poland called blitzkreig. Even though Britain, France and Poland made an impressive alliance, at least on paper, with them having more soldiers and more infantry divisions than Germany. However, Germany had more machine guns, artillery, and other weapons than the alliance, making Germany able to invade Poland.
