    Jews were exiled from Western Europe during the 13th century. However, during the Renaissance the Jewish population in Italy increased. The first signs of anti-semitism could be seen during this time as the Jews were excluded from occupations - which made them stand out as business owners, bankers, and finance people.

    In 1775 Judaism is suppressed by Pope Pius VI with this edic over the Hebrew. This edict was in place untill 1800 when Napolian's army arrived. It imposed restrictions on the Jewish popluation. This is another example of anti-semitism in Italy.

    Italy joined the Axis powers in 1940 when Benito Mussolini was the Fascist dictator. Fascism is great nationalism and expanding teriitories. Italian involvement in the war elevated the degree of antisemetism. At this point in the war Italy was being influenced by the other Axis Powers by sending Jews to concentration camps.

    Pope Pius XII was the Pope at the time of World War 2. Pope Pius XII was responsable of saving hundreds of thousands of lives by aiding the Jews discreetly. Although he acomplished saving Jewish lives, the Alied powers considered his actions inadequate and the Nazis saw him as a sympathizer to the Aliied powers.

    Artist in Aushwitz
    Aushwitz was one of the main concentration camps in Poland run by German commandar Rudolf Hoss. Many italian Jews were sent to Aushwitz, but some of them were different then other prisoners. Some of the prisoners had artistic talents that helped them survive their time in the camp. One Italian Jew who spent her time in Aushwitz was Dina Babbitt. Dina was a Holocaust survivor who painted portraits of inmates for the infsmous Dr. Mengele. She died in 2009.
