Apprenticeship
Michelangelo was apprenticed to the painter Domenico Ghirlandaio.He then lived in the household of Lorenzo de' Medici,the leading patreon of the arts in Florence. -

Pietà
His Pietà,a work of Renaissance sculpture housed in St. Peter's Basilica,Vatican City,made his name as an artist.A pietà is a subject in Christian art depicting the Virgin Mary cradling the dead body of Jesus, most often found in sculpture. -

David

Sistine Chapel
Michelangelo painted the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel.It was recognised at once as a great work of art and from then on Michelangelo was regarded as Italy's greatest living artist. -

The Last Judgment
Shortly before his death in 1534, Pope Clement VII commissioned Michelangelo to paint a fresco of The Last Judgement on the altar wall of the Sistine Chapel. It is a depiction of the Second Coming of Christ and the final and eternal judgment by God of all humanity. -
