  • Stamp Act

    On March 22, 1765, the British government passed the stamp act. The colonies believed that the government should not be able to tax them without their representation. The colonies opposed the taxes with boycotts. It was later repealed in 1776. This event was asymmetrical because the British did not expect the colonists to boycott their goods.
  • Boston Massacre

    Boston Massacre
    On March 5th, 1770, a group of British solders shot into a crowd of colonists. These colonists were rioting. This event happened in Boston, this is why it is called the Boston Massacre. This event is asymmetrical because the colonists did not fight back.
  • Boston Tea Party

    During the night of December 16th of 1773, a group of colonists suck onto British ships and threw the tea into the water. This was done to oppose the tax on tea. The colonists were disguised as Mohawk Indians as they destroyed the tea. This event caused the Coercive Acts to be established later in 1774. This event was asymmetrical because the colonists had done this while the British made laws.

    In the morning of April 19th, the fighting began! This was between the British solders and the colonists.The British outnumbered the colonists. The colonists, however, still caused the British solders to retreat. this event is asymmetrical because the colonists did not stay in any formation, unlike the British.
  • Battle of Bunker Hill

    On June 17th 1775, British solders attacked the colonists on Breeds hill. The colonists had walls built up on Breed's hill and defended against the British solders from this position. The British won this battle, but lost many solders. This event is asymmetrical because the British attacked in lines while the colonists where behind their walls.
  • Common Sense

    Published February 14th of 1176, "Common Sense" was written by a man named Thomas Paine. "Common Sense" gave inspiration for the American Revolution. It both opposed the king and the British government, and supported the colonies being one country. This is a symmetrical because most people did not believe these things at this time.
  • Declaration of Independence

    Declaration of Independence
    The Declaration of Independence was adopted by congress on July 4th of 1776. Originally written by Thomas Jefferson, the declaration explained that it was necessary for the colonists to separate from Britain. Many of the ideas came from Thomas Paine's "Common Sense." This event was asymmetrical because the British did not expect the colonists to want to separate completely.
  • Battle of Trenton and Princeton

    On December 26th, Washington's men attacked the Hessian mercenaries and British solders. The opposing army was not prepared for the attack. These victories allowed the continental army to gain much of the surrounding area. The battle was asymmetrical because usually army's did not fight in the winter.
  • Battle of Saratoga

    Battle of Saratoga
    The Battle of Saratoga occurred November 19th of 1777. This was actually two battles between the British and the colonists. The first was won by the British, at the expense of many of their solders. The second was won by the colonists causing the British to retreat. this battle also convinced the French to join the fight. This event was symmetrical because both armies fought against each other directly.
  • Continental Army Winters at Valley Forge

    Continental Army Winters at Valley Forge
    The continental army entered the camp December 19th, 1777. The army trained during their time here. The site was chosen because it would be effective in defending against a British attack. It could also be used to keep an eye on the British solders. When the men left the camp the following year, they were better trained and disciplined. This event is asymmetrical because the colonial army wintered in a camp while the British army took over peoples homes.
  • Battle of Charleston

    The Battle of Charleston began March 29th 1780. The colonists suffered a great defeat to the British army. The British captured more than 3,000 solders. The British army only lost around 250 solders during this battle. This event is symmetrical because both armies fought each other directly.
  • Battle of Yorktown

    Battle of Yorktown
    The Battle of Yorktown occurred November 28th of 1781. The continental army, led by Washington, fought against the British defenses. Two British defenses were captured. This was the final battle of the American Revolution. This event was asymmetrical because the colonial army attacked as the British army defended.
