In early civilization, Sumerians engraved pictures on stones, glass, or ceramic. They used an engraved cylinder to roll pictures out onto clay. People used them as signatures, magic amulets, and jewlery. These stones are very important to history because they tell stories past civilizations and help historians in their work.

Egyptian papyrus scrolls was essentially the first paper. Egyptians found papyrus plants, which were a great alternative to stone. Papyrus was used for thousands of years because it was so easy to carry around (especially compared to the heavy stones that had been used before).

Sumarians used stylus's made of reed to ingrave words on wet clay slabs. The Sumarians dried the tablets in the sun if they wanted them to be reusable, because if you were to wet the slabs they could be recycled. Special slabs were fired in a kiln and because very hard and durable. These tablets are very important to history because they show what life was like in ancient times.

The Phoenician Alphabet was formed so that people could easily track and record trades. This alphabet had no vowels, but it had 22 consanents. The alphabet looks like little pictures to us, but to ancient people they made enough sense not to need any vowels; people spoke the language so much that they knew what went in between the consanents without seeing it.

John Milton wrote a pamphlet called Aeropagitica. It "caused quite a stir", and many wanted it burned. Random fact about Milton: He married a seventeen year old girl when he was 35, and then on top of that he got BORED of her after ONE MONTH and sent her back to her parents! What a crazy man!!!!

"Freedman's Journal" was the first newspaper in America published by an African American. This newspaper was operated by a couple of black men in New York City. This newspaper got started when slavery ended, and it's purpose was to counter other racist newspapers.
