    McClellan wrote a letter saying his army is to small to fight against General Lee's force, therefore leading to a Union victory. Lee's force was greater than 92,000 men. Objective of the war was to capture the confederate Capital.
  • Hampton Roads

    This battle was between Northern-bulit Merrimack and the Southern-built Monitor. This engagment was the history's nfirst duel between ships. The purpose was to break the Northern blockade of Southern ports. The Southern ships success on march 8 rasied false hopes that the Union blockade might be broken. Although the monitor was sunk it was considered victorious.

    One of the Unions most successful camaigns of the war. Confederate forces surrendered Vicksburg due to lack of ammuniton and lack of food and soldiers. Vicksburg was one of the last remaining defense units on the Mississippi river.

    The battle began when the Confederates launched a surprise attack on Union forces. Union forces eventually pushed confederate forces back causing a Union victory. Both sides had around 2,000 deaths.

    On April 12,1862 at 4:30 am the confederacy opened fire on the fort. After 34 hours of fire Anderson and his troops wereforced to surrender due to the shortage of ammo. This aroused and united the North. During the Civil War the Confederate troops on gaurd constantly got bombarded.

    McDowell's Union force was the first to strike, driving the confederate troops across Bull Run while more Union troops crossed the Sudley Ford river hoping to hit the confederates left flank.In 2 hours 10,000 Federals pushed 4,500 rebels acrossed Warrington turnpike and up Henry House Hill. Around 4 o'clock pm both sides were equall in troops. In the end the confederates won. This showed the Union that taught that the war would be over in a few months not to underestimate their oppenent.

    General Robert E. Lee(confederate) and General George McClellan(union) faced off at the battled of Antietam. General George McClellan and the union are considered to be the winneres due to Lees retreat. This battle only lasted on night( september 18). This win gave lincon the oppertunity to make the Emancipation Proclamation.

    The newly apointed General Burnside moved two corps to Falmouth. Unfortunately the section they tried to cross was too deep so he was forced to wait for a pontoon bridge. Due to miscommunication the pontoons were delayed in arriving. While the Confederate trooops had ampile time to get deployed. the Union lost this battle nearly loosing 13,000 to the Confederates 5,000. Due to the crushing defeat Burnside was removed. This landslide win for the Confederatce rejumped their hopes.

    General Lee had his greatest victory on April 9,1863 even though the Union had double his troops. General Lee split his troops half under his commad and half under "stonewall" Jacksons. Lee flanked Union Gen. Joseph Hooker and wont this battle on May 6,1863. Lee now possessed the strategic initiative, which in a few weeks would lead him north to Gettysburg.

    By mid September Union General William Rosecrans of the Union had pushed Braxton Bragg's Army of Tennessee out of Chattanooga. 12 miles southwest at Chickamauga on Sept. 19 the forces met again lining the woods of the Chickamauga Creek. The Confederate troops won this battle in autum of 1863 but at a costly measure, they lost 20,000 troops and the Union had lost 16,000. This is considered to be the bloodiest battle of the west.

    This is known as the bloodiest battle of the war. The battle was a crushing defeat for the Confederacy. Union casualties in the battle were as high as 23,000 but did not compare to the some 28,000 lost by the Confederacy (1/3 of Lee's army). The Northb partied while the South cried. Lee offered his resignation but was refused. Gettysburg and the victory at Vicksburg were the turning point of the Civil War in the Unions favor. Gettysburg ended on July 4th.

    This battle took place in southern Virginia. An outcome of the battle was General Ulysses S.Grant captured fort Harrisen. Therefore leading a Union victory and a Confederate loss.

    General Sherman (after loosing Atlanta) headed west into Tennessee and Alabama, atacking anything involving the Union. they split into two groups and Major George Thomas took 60,000 men to met confederates in Aashville. Sherman continued through George to Savannah "smashing things". Sherman started "Total War" witch made it impossible for the confederates to fight.

    On April 9,1865 General Ulysses S. Grant in the front parlor of Wilmer McLean's home in Appomattox Court House, Virginia caught General Lee on his retreat for more forces and forced him to surrender. Thus ending the Civil War.

    Abraham Lincoln was assassinated in Fords Theatre by John Wilker Booth. He was pronounced dead at 7:22 a.m that morning. He was shot at 10:15 p.m in the back of the head with a .44 caliber pistol.
