Mandela was born on 18 July 1918 in the village of Mvezo in Umtata, then part of South Africa's Cape Province.

Mandela meets Walter Sisulu, who becomes a mentor and lifelong friend. Mandela attended Communist Party gatherings, where he was impressed that Europeans, Africans, Indians, and Coloureds mixed as equals.

In December, Mandela was given a six-month ban from attending meetings or talking to more than one individual at a time.

On 5 August 1962, police captured Mandela along with fellow activist Cecil Williams near Howick. Many MK (uMkhonto we Sizwe) members suspected that the authorities had been tipped off with regard to Mandela's whereabout.

Mandela escapes the death penalty, but is sentenced to life imprisonment, and incarcerated on Robben Island Prison. He will serve his sentence under prisoner number 46664.

1976 appeared as a stepping stone in the history of South Africa. Indeed, in a black township of Soweto, security forces shot and killed Black students protesters. This event made the world aware of what was going on in South Africa. The South African government came under pressure from inside the country and worldwide.
