  • South Carolina Resigns

    South Carolina Resigns
    From December 17th to December 24th, various parts of South Carolina were resigning from the Union. After these few days, South Carolina Governor Francis Wilkinson Pickens finalizes the resignation. This helped to start the Confederacy's forming.
  • The Confederate States Of America (The Confederacy) Is Formed

    On this date, the official forming of the Confederacy occured. A few states had already planned on forming a Confederacy. But once there was enough states resigned from the Union, they officially formed the Confederate States Of America (otherwise known as the Confederacy).
  • Bull Run Battle (Manassas) was fought.

    Bull Run Battle (Manassas) was fought.
    This battle, the first major battle of the Civil War, was fought in Prince William County, Virginia, near the city of Manassas. It was close to Washington, DC. Each side had about 18,000 troops, but they were poorly trained and poorly coordinated. This battle was the bloodiest battle up to that time, the Union had 460 men killed, 1,124 wounded, and 1,312 missing or captured; the Confederacy had 387 men killed, 1,582 wounded, and 13 missing.
  • Emancipation Proclamation

    President Abraham Lincoln gave this Proclamation on September 23rd 1862. He said that on 1/1/63, any and all slaves in the rebelling states would be free. It didn't affect border states, though. It also forced the European nations to see that to choose a side in the Civil War is to take a stand on slavery.
  • Battle of Gettysburg Day One

    John Buford, anticipating an attack from the Confederate army, laid out his troops in defenses on three ridges west of the town. By 10:20a.m. the Confederates had forced the Union men east. The fighting started. This first day at Gettysburg ranks as the 23rd biggest battle of war by the number of troops engaged. One quarter of the Confederate's army (22,000 men) and one third of the Union's army (27,000) were engaged during only the first day.

    Around 7p.m., Little Round Top was attacked. Most of the defenders had been sent to the left flank to defend against the other attacks. Only a brigade of New Yorkers under Gen. George S. Greene's order were on the hill. But the men held off the Confederate attackers, but part of the hill was captured by the Confederate army.

    Soon enough, the Confederate army slammed into the Union III Corps. The Union army was forced to send 20,000 reinforcements, which was the entire V Corps, Gen. John C. Caldwell's division of the II Corps, most of the XII Corps and a small amount of the new arrivers of the VI Corps. As they battled, Little Round Top, an important hill captured by the Union, was being heavily protected.
  • Battle Of Gettysburg Day Three/Final Day

    General Robert E. Lee, leader of the Union army, decided to continue the battle using the same plan as the day before. Before the Confederate army was ready, the Union attacked trying to regain their lost portion of the hill. The Confederates attacked, and the second battle ended around 11a.m. Later that day, the Union attacked again. and after 2 to 3 hours they stopped and the Confederates advanced further.

    By the end of the battle, the casualties for both sides during the entire campaign were 57,225. The Union casualities were 23,055 (3,155 killed, 14,531 wounded, 5,369 captured or missing). But, no one knows the exact amount for the Confederates. Estimates range anywhere from 28,000 casualities to 23,231 casualities.
  • Battle of Chattanooga Day 1 and 2

    The Union placed many attacks on the Southern army that was in Chattanooga, Tennessee in an attempt to capture the town. The Union had attacked Lookout Mountain and captured the mountain after six hours of fighting.
  • Battle of Chattanooga Day 3

    The Union attacked Tunnel Hill, despite the fact that the attack was a failure, a second attack completely broke the center of the Confederate line. This victory, the third, in these three days led to the Confederate withdrawal and let the Deep South to be invaded by the Union.
  • The Southerners (Confederates) Surrender

    After years of war and losses, General Robert E. Lee (The main general of the Confederates) surrendered. He couldn't lose anymore troops and he knew with the, by far, fewer amount of soldiers he had, he wouldn't win the war.
