    University of Paris
After her mother died and her father couldn't support her, Marie got a job. She helped her older sister get to Paris, who would in turn help Marie get into Paris to study. After 5 years of being a tutor and governess, she made it to France in 1891 and gained entry to the University of Paris. This is significant because this is where Marie starts her scientific journey towards hers discoveries. Source: ("Marie Curie Biography" and Rubin 14 and "Marie Curie the Scientist" and Meadows 190)
  • A research scientist

    A research scientist
In the University of Paris, Marie completed her master’s degree in physics and math the year after. After completing her master’s degree, Marie finally became a research scientist in December of 1895 and got her first research project. This is significant because this allowed Marie to start her own research and experiments, which would lead her to her discoveries. Source: (Meadows 190-191 timeline and “ Marie Curie Biography”)
  • Marriage

    Marriage
Marie’s first research project was on magnetism. Dr.Kovalski had advised her to talk with Pierre Curie. So, Marie met and Pierre and they worked together for a while. They soon fell in love and decide to get married. They got married on July 26, 1895. This is significant because Marie and Pierre had become a scientific duo. With the help of Pierre, Marie discovered many things, which improved the science community and field. Source: (Keller 30 and Meadows 190 and Rubin 26)
  • Uranic Rays and radioactivity

    Uranic Rays and radioactivity
Marie Curie started her study of “Uranic Rays” in 1896. She took Henri Becquerel’s work further and discovered that the rays stayed the same no matter the form or condition of Uranium. Marie Curie called this phenomenon Radioactivity. But, she still had some questions left answered. This is significant because this was the start of Marie’s work in radioactivity. She would later discover many things through radioactivity. Source: ("Marie Curie Biography" and Meadows 190-191 timeline)
  • Discovery of Polonium

    Discovery of Polonium
After Marie’s discovery about radioactivity, Pierre put aside his work and helped her. They worked on some pitchblende and soon discovered a black powder that was more radioactive than uranium in July of 1898. They named this element Polonium after Marie’s home country. This is significant because this was Marie’s first accomplishment that she is known for. She had added and contributed to the science field. • Discovered Radium

    Discovered Radium
After Marie’s discovery of Polonium, she realized that there was still a black liquid left in the pitchblende that was causing radioactivity. After extracting that was well, she named this element Radium. She announced this discovery in December of 1898. This is significant because this was Marie’s second accomplishment. This is what Marie is most known for. Radium is a big part of our medical field today. Source: ("Marie Curie Biography"and Meadows 198 and "Marie Curie the Scientist")
  • 1st Nobel Prize

    1st Nobel Prize
The first Nobel prize Marie had won was in Physics in 1903. She had won the honor with Pierre and Henri for their work on radioactivity. Henri had gotten half of the prize and Pierre and Marie both got ¼ of the prize each. Both Pierre and Marie used the money to continue their research. This is significant because this was the first time a women had ever won a Nobel Prize in history. Source: ("Marie Curie Biography"and Meadows 190-191 timeline)
  • 2nd Nobel Prize

    2nd Nobel Prize
Marie won another Nobel Prize in chemistry. In 1911 she was chosen for her discovery of Radium and Polonium. This is significant because she was the 1st scientist to ever win two Nobel peace prizes. Source: (Biography.com Editors)

    World wide influenza epidemic
In 1918, a worldwide influenza epidemic stroked. This flu epidemic was first observed in Europe, the U.S, and parts of Asia before it spread. More than 25% of the population had become sick.
