    -resourceful southern raise and reconstructed a former wooden U.S. warship
    -the merrimack, now plated with old iron railroad rails, destroys -several union ships off the coast of Virginia.
    -The monitor arrives on the science the next day
    after several hours of close engagement, the ships retreat in a draw

    • emboldened by this success, lee invaded maryland invades north
    • union soldiers found a copy of lee’s battle plans wrapped around a packet of three cigars, dropped by a confederate officer- revealed Lee and Stonewall Jackson’s armies were separated
    • bloodiest battle of the war - 24,000 - 26,000 casualties
    • lee retreats back to virginia; mcclellan fails to pursue and is removed from command
