  • American School of The Deaf

    American School of The Deaf

    When this school first started, it was originally called the Connecticut Asylum for the Education and Instruction of Deaf and Dumb Persons. This institution began with only seven students and quickly grew in size throughout the years. It was also the first American school exclusively educating deaf children.

  • Association of Instructors of the Blind

    Association of Instructors of the Blind

    The Association of Instructors of the Blind is a place for visually and hearing impaired children to learn. This institution was formed from delegates of 14 different states working together seeking the best interest of the blind. This group was instrumental in initiating government funding of $250,000 yearly to go towards books and other resources for the blind.
  • Council for Exceptional Children

    Council for Exceptional Children

    This is the biggest organization that helps improve children with disabilities, talents, and gifts. This organization not only is an advocate for people with disabilities, but also plays a major role in developing professionals with a focus in a disability practices. This organization frequently issues publications regarding awareness and informational research regarding disabilities.
  • Brown vs. Board

    Brown vs. Board

    This famous case was based around segregation in public schools. Oliver Brown was brave enough to stand up for his daughter to get the education she deserved. After a lawsuit was filed and through due process, the judge thought it “deprived of the equal protection of the laws guaranteed by the 14th Amendment”. This was a landmark decision for racial equality in America.

    Elementary and Secondary Act

    This act was made for school districts with low-income households. The program provided schools with the proper resources, materials, and knowledge to help them. Since this act was placed, it has been revised every five years.
  • Education for all Handicapped Children Act

    Education for all Handicapped Children Act

    Any child with a mental or physical disability was provided the chance at a public school education, funded by the federal government. This gave every child the chance to have an equal part in school. The act would promote mainstreaming by improving education with a less restrictive environment.
  • Handicapped Children's Protection Act

    Handicapped Children's Protection Act

    This act built on a previous effort, the Education for All Handicapped Children Act of 1975. This was important for parents and families at the time it was enacted. The act was passed to help parents have more of a voice in their child’s IEPs.
  • Americans with Disabilities Act

    Americans with Disabilities Act

    This act was signed by President George W. Bush. This act meant that anyone with a disability working, or at school, would not be discriminated by other people. It promised that everybody with special needs would have the same rights as anybody else.
  • Individual's with Disabilities Education Act

    Individual's with Disabilities Education Act

    This act makes sure that every person with a disability is entitled to a free appropriate public education (FAPE). It was changed multiple times to ensure equal access to education. This is another example of mainstreaming due to the role it played in building up the education of disabled individuals.
  • No Child Left Behind Act

    No Child Left Behind Act

    This was a law made specifically for K-12 students in general education. Children were basically held accountable for how they learned and how well they did. If you did not meet the requirements, the school was unfortunately penalized.
