-
A butterfly first starts as an egg.
-
These eggs are small are round. They are normally laid closely together on a leaf.
-
After 5 days, the egg will hatch and begin stage 2.
-
Once the egg hatches, it becomes a caterpillar. A caterpillar is also known as a larve.
-
During this stage, the caterpillar eats, eats, eats! It even eats the leaf that it hatches on!
-
The caterpillar grows very fast because of all the eating. They will shed their skin up to five times during this stage. Shedding their skin can also be called molting. They are only in this stage for two weeks.
-
A chrysalis is also known as a pupa. This is when the caterpillar is done growing. This is it's time of rest.
-
In this stage, the caterpillar begins to change into a butterfly. This is a rapid change that takes 5-10 days.
-
This is the last stage! The butterfly will come out of its chrysalis. It is sometime called am imago.
-
The butterfly will soon learn to fly. It does not take them long to learn. They will then find a mate, lay eggs, and start the life cycle over again!
