Lesson 2.3 Learning Assessment: Congress at Work

  • Step One

    A Bill is introduced into Congress by a Representative who places the bill in a hopper at the front of the floor. It is either a private or a public bill. It then is sent to a committee that specializes in its subject
  • Step 2

    The Bill is looked over, debated and changed until the committee is happy with it. It is then scheduled to be voted on.
  • Step 3

    The Bill is voted on it either passes or fails. If it passes it is sent to the president for approval.
  • Step 4

    The President either vetos the bill of passes the bill, if it passes it is sent to become law. If it is vetoed the bill is sent back to Congress for amendment of is 'killed'.
  • Using Money Step One

    A bill is introduced into congress that asks for the allocation of funds to benefit a program.
  • Using Money Step 2

    The bill is then debated, it either passes or fails, the bill doesn't need the approval of the President. Once passed the funds are allocated to the program that requested the funds.
