    U.S. diplomats persuaded Spain to cede Florida to the United States
  • Monroe Doctrine

  • Texas's Annexation

    Texas is admitted into the Union as a slave state.
  • Oregon Territory

    US acquired Oregon and a treaty is signed with Britain to do so
  • Mexican-American War

    Lasted from 1846 - 1848. Mexico formally recognized the annexation of Texas and the Rio Grande as its border. It also ceded a huge region of land to the United States, stretching from Texas to California
  • Matthew Perry comes to Japan

    Commodore Matthew Perry led a small fleet of American warships into Edo Bay, Japan, now known as Tokyo. Perry had arrived in order to open up Japan to American shipping and trade.
  • Matthew Perry Negotiates Treaty With Japan

    Perry returned with a larger fleet to negotiate a treaty with Japan. Japan did not consent to trade but consented to other things.
  • Treaty is signed with Japan

    Treaty was signed with Japan that opened them to trade with the USA.
  • Purchase of Alaska

    Alaska is purchased from Russia.
  • Midway Islands

    USA claimed uninhabited Midway Islands to serve as a coaling station for steamships.

    Creates a protectorate in the Samoan Islands (a nation protected and controlled by a stronger nation)
