The Compromise of 1850 was when, in order to solve a rising crisis, some adjustments were made. California was made a free state, the Missouri Line was abolished, and the New Mexico territory was made into a voting area, where slavery could be voted on. Nobody was satisfied by this and it only made the problem worse.

Abraham Lincoln is elected the 16th president over a deeply divided democratic party. Lincoln received 40% of popular vote defeating the other three candidates. Who were democrat John C Breckenridge, John Bell, and Stephen Douglas.When Lincoln won the election showed signs of session this made the southern states furious. Lincoln was not for slavery in the west and didn't want it spreading.
