After years of being a slave, Truth was finally able to become free of this life. On June 1, 1843, Isabella Baumfree (Truth's former name) was able to change her name to Sojourner Truth. From this, Truth dedicated her life to both Methodism and the abolishment of slavery. I think this influenced the individual’s advocacy for gender equality because this was the beginning of all the powerful work that Truth wanted to do.

During the 1850s, Truth was involved in the woman's right movement. In 1851, Truth attended the Women’s Rights Convention and shared the most famous women’s rights speech in history titled, “Ain’t I a Woman?" Truth's speech discussed both racial and gender inferiority. I think this speech influenced gender equality because she challenged the idea of gender roles and discussed her own experiences as both a slave and women.

After her famous speech, Truth continued her work in sharing advocacy. In 1864, Truth was invited to Washington, D.C, and she spoke with President Abraham Lincoln. She was able to talk to him about her beliefs and experiences about slavery and gender equality. I think this event influenced her advocacy for gender equality because she was able to meet with the leader of the United States to discuss change. She had a huge influence in this and her hard work was showcased.
