    My Reading Timeline

  • Little Girl

    Little Girl
As a little girl my parents often read to me. My favorite books were by Dr. Seusss. I believe this later influenced me to appreciate more unique writers.
  • 3rd Grade

In the 3rd grade I was diagnosed with dyslexia. I knew that I struggled with letters and numbers and often wrote them backwards, but this news made me believe that I could not read like the rest of my classmates and I felt discouraged. This struggle continued until high school.
  • 4th Grade Teacher

Teachers sometimes influence students to become the most amazing people, and be more than they ever dreamed they could be. While other times, teachers can make a student turn tail and run from any educational opportunity. Thankfully my "hell" teacher happened in the 4th grade and I was able to recover, but because of her strict restrictions on what we could and couldn't read, I pushed reading that much further away.
  • 9th Grade

My Freshman year of high school redeemed me and I felt that I was on par, or above, my classmates. My scores were at the top of my class, and I felt that I was capable of learning as much as anyone else. I still did not enjoy reading and read slowly, but I would do my homework and felt confident in my reading and writing skills.
  • 10th Grade

    10th Grade
My English teacher required the class to read The Lord of the Rings. This was the first book I remember enjoying reading and looking forward to picking up again and again. I realize now, that this would indicate the types of books I enjoy reading. Fantasy books that detailed out a new world were interesting and intriguing to me.
  • College

    College
After attempting to find my "calling" by jumping from one major to another in college, I finally found inspiration in the English department. Reading was still not my favorite pastime, but with the reading load required in this field, I stepped up and improved my skills.
  • Harry Potter Connection

The weekend before my grandmother passed away in October of 2008, my mom gave me the Harry Potter series. She had recently bought and read them all. Believing I might enjoying them, she packed them up for me and I hauled them home shortly after seeing my grandma for the last time.
I never dreamed that these books would change the way I thought of reading for the rest of my life. Until this point, I read for homework and if I absolutly had to, but never for fun, but I couldn't put them down.
  • Magazine Job

After college, I worked for a magazine as the Ad Sales Coordinator. The publication was tiny, so I wore many hats, such as: photographer, writer, editor, marketing manager, and bookeeper. I not only learned how to be a team player, but also how to read and think critically when looking at a piece about to go to print. Being an agricultural publication, I learned more about goats and sheep than I ever knew before.
  • Becoming a Teacher

After deciding to go back to college to pursue my MA in Education, I recieved my teaching certification and started teaching high school ELA. This inspired me to not only read for fun, but begin reading research based materials on learning theories and how to teach different types of students. I began branching out to different areas of content and learning as much as I could about education and teaching practices.
  • To Infinity and Beyond

Currently pursuing my MA online is requiring more reading and self-teaching than I have ever expeirenced before. I enjoying reading the different types of research and trying to fit different learning theories into my classroom practices.
