    Public schools were only avaiable to the wealthy, they also were provided private tutors and schools were not avaiable to the poor.

    New England Colonies (1620-1638)

    The New England colonies- Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Massachusetts, Connecticut, and New Hampshire differed from the other colonies. One they culturally and religiously homogeneous, which made consensus about school goals easier to achieve. Secondly, industry and commerce encouraged the clustering of people into towns, which allowed the formation of common schools.

    -Massachusetts became the leader of education in the United States; it doubled state appropriations for education, builts 50 new secondary schools, increased teacher salaries by 50% and passed the nation's 1st compulsory school attendance law in 1852.

    -50% of American children were enrolled in public schools and 28 of 35 states had established state boards of education.

    32 states passed laws similar to Horace Mann's influence, doubling state appropriations for education, building new secondary schools and increasing teachers salaries.

    -Jamestown settled, and was the root of American education.

    Diversity among colonies parochial school were created, and included the study of religion in addition to the three R's. Students learned in their Native languages, and local religious beliefs, such as the study of the Lutheran religion in German schools, were an integral part of the curriculum.
