Kite Runner & the History of Afghanistan

  • Annual Kite Flying Competition

    In this year the annual kite flying competion takes place and Amir and Hassan participate in it. Amir hopes to win so then he can earn the respect he longs for from his father.
  • Afghanistan

    Even before the attack of 9/11 and the U.S fighting in Afghanistan to create peace. The Isolamic Republic of Afghanistan has had little to no peace because of the Soviet Union's invasion, "Three decades ago, Afghanistan was a stable, relatively prosperous and relatively secular country. The turmoil and extremism that have dominated its history since then can be traced to the 1979 invasion by the Soviet Union..."
  • Soviet Union

    This is when the Soviet Army comes in and invades Afghanistan and forms a comunist government.
  • Soviet Union's first arrival

    The Soviet Union first arrived to Kabaul in 1979, "The first Soviet troops parachuted into Kabul on Dec. 27, 1979, to assist Babrak Karmal, who had become president in a coup within the Afghan Communist leadership".
  • Olympic Games in Moscow

    Another important historical event that happened in the Kite runner is when Amir says "In 1980, when we were still in Kabul, the U.S. announced it would be boycotting the Olympic Games in Moscow" (Hosseini 126).
  • Bound to America

    Baba and Amir flee to America to have a better life and get away from the teribble start of the Taliban. They now live in Fremont, California and try to start over their lives even though its tough at first.
  • Baba's terrible tradedgy

    Baba finds out someehing terrible has happened to him. He soon discovers from a doctor that he is diagnosed with "Oat Cell Carcinoma" (156). Ther is no cure for ithis certain type of cancer and it is highly likley that he will not survive it.
  • Rahim Khan's visit to Hassan

    Rahim Khan goes to Hazarajat to go find Hassan.
  • Baba's Death

    Since Baba is diagnosed with cancer that can't be cured but can be treated he takes pills to lesson the pain. He decides to not take them one day and then he shorty dies that night.
  • Soviet Union's Invasion

    The Siviet Union caused a lot of trouble while they were in Kabul and many lives were lost as they fought, "Soviet troops stayed in the country for more than nine years, fighting a conflict that cost them roughly 15,000 lives and unclosed billions of rubles, while undermining the cherished image of an invincible Soviet Army".
  • Tliban started to form

    Even in 1994 the Tliban started to come into play, "As early as 1994, Pakistani intelligence officers began fueling arms, money and supplies to Mullah Omar's men, as well as military advisers to help guide them into battle".
  • Impact on Afghanistan after Soviet Union

    After the Soviet Union left Afghanistan, it took a huge negative impact on Afghanistan, " After Soviet forces departed, Afghanistan descended into vicious internecine strife; by the summer of 1994..." .
  • Start of the Taliban

    During this time the Taliban just started to come into action. "The Taliban grew out of a student movement dedicated to purifying the country, based in the southeast, the home of the dominant ethic group, the Pashtun".
  • Tliaban started to take over

    Pakistani started to take over with the Taliban and many people lost their rights especially women, " Buoyed by Pakistani aid, the Taliban by 1996 had taken control of Afghanistan, imposing strict enforcement of fundemantal Islamic law, banning movies and music and forcing women out of schools and into all-enveloping burqa clothing".
  • Killing of Hazaras

    Everyone thought when the Taliban rolled in that they would all be safe, but they thought wrong. The Taliban "massacred the Hazaras in Mazar-i-Sharif"
  • Hassan's Death

    Since the Taliban has taken over most of Afghanistan, Hassan gets killed and his son, Sohrab now becomes an orphan with no one to take care of him.
  • Amir finds out the truth

    Amir finds out his true relationship between him and Hassan "found out that my father is also a father to Hassan, which makes us brothers" (Hosseini 223). "I'm thirty-eight years old and I just found out my whole life is one big f***king li" (Hosseini 223).
  • Hassan's son

    Amir then soon finds out that his now brother, Hassan, has a son still left in Kabul that he needs to go and find. Amir thinks "there is a way to be good again" (Hosseini 192). He says this because since he didn't stop Assef from doing what he did to Hassan, finding his son after his death can make-up for it.
  • Assef & Amir

    Amir and Assef are now face to face confrentating over Sohrab. Assef tries to kill Amir but Sohrab injures him with "a slingshot and a metal ball" (Hosseini 257). And Amir and Sohrab walk out of the Taliban alive.
  • Sohrab's attemp of suicide

    Sohrab attempts suicide to try to get away of all the troubles of the Taliban and the loss of his father. He cuts himself and almost bleeds to death in a bathtub before Amir cathes him and saves him.
  • Afghanistan

    Ever since the attack of 9/11 on the twin towers, the United States have been involved with their military in Afghanistan to fight to make peace with eachother.
  • Amir's back in Afghanistan

    When Amir returns to Afghanistan to find his dead brothers son, he finds out Hassan's son, Sohrab, is taken by the Taliban. He finds out where the Taiban are taking the children, goes there, and stands up for Sohrab when a general says "He doesn't matter hes just a Hazara" (Hosseini 246). This shows how Amir is now trying to really makeup to Hassan for what he has done, and is finally getting thenerve to stand up for people he truly cares about.
  • Karazi Government

    "Mohammad Zahir Shah, the exiled former king of Afghanistan, was named chairman of an interim government that replaced the defeated Taliban, making him the leader of the country. He took office as interim president in June 2002, saying he hoped to secure peace for Afghanistan...".
  • Obama's War

    Obama tried to help fight in Afghanistan, "In a speech delivered Dec. 1 2009, at West Point, Mr. Obama announced his plan to deploy 30,000 additional troops".
