Kite Runner & the History of Afghanistan

  • Baba is born and Ali is adopted.

    In 1933, the year Baba was born and the year Zahir Shah began his forty-year reign of Afghanistan, two brothers, young men from a wealthy and reputable family in Kabul, got behind the wheel of their father's Ford roaster," (Hosseini 24). This quote is important because it talks about hown in 1933 Baba was born and how the two brothers ran over the Hazara couple that had a five year old boy. Baba's father adopted the boy and they boy turned out to be Ali.
  • Hassan is born

    Amir said, "It was there, in that little shack, that Hassan was born in the winter of 1964, just one year after my mother died giving birth to me," (Hosseini 6). This quote is important because without Hassan there is no story. Also, because of Amir's mothers death, Amir searches for approval from Baba, rather then a kind, loving mother.
  • Hassan's first words.

    Amir said, "And, under the same roof, we spoke our first words. Mine was Baba. His was Amir. My name. Looking back on it now, I think the foundation for what happened in the winter of 1975- and all that followed- ws already laid in those first words," (Hosseini 11). Hassan's first word was Amir, this shows that Hassan cared for Amir from an early age. Since the quote said that this was the foundation for what would happen, it is a foreshadow to how Hassan will be loyal to Amir forever.
  • Amir is 12

    As said by Amir, "I became what I am today at the age of twelve, on a frigid overcast day in the winter of 1975. I remember the precise moment, crouching behind a crumbled mud wall, peeking in to an alley..." (Hosseini 1). This quote is a foreshadow to what will happen to Hassan. It is also telling us about how much this event effected him and stayed with him for his entire life.
  • Hassan's last kite run

    When Amir was describing what happend that winter he said, "In the winter of 1975, I saw Hassan run a kite for the last time," (Hosseini 55). This quote is important because it forshadows what is going to happen in the future of the book. Also, it explains what happens due to the events that transpire in the future.
  • Soviet Union Invades Afghanistan

    In the article, "Afghanistan- An Overview" the author states, "The first Soviet troops parachuted into Kabul on Dec. 27, 1979." (Afghanistan- An Overview)
  • Amir and Baba are now in America

    Fremont, California. 1980's. As Amir said, "Baba loved America. It was living in America that gave him an ulcer," (Hosseini 125). Amir and Baba are now living in America. They are away from the war and are living a safe life that they enjoy very much, although they both still miss parts of the old Afghanistan that they were used to.
  • Amir and Baba's travel to Pakistan

    When Amir is describing the truck that he and Baba are travelling in he describes it as, "There were others, in all about a dozen, including Baba and me, sitting with our suitcases between our legs, cramped with these strangers in the tarpaulin-covered cab of an old Russian truck," (Hosseini 110). Amir and Baba are now leaving Afghanistan and are trying to make it into Pakistan so that they can get to America. War has started in Afghanistan and they are trying to get to safety.
  • Rahim Kahn looks for Hassan

    Rahim Kahn said, "There were a lot of reasons why I went to Hazarajat to find Hassan in 1986. The biggest one, Allah forgive me, was that I was lonely," (Hosseini 203). Rahim Kahn is still living in Afghanistan by himself. Everyone has left except for him. He goes looking for Hassan because Hassan is the only person that he knows left in the country. Because Rahim Khan looks for him, Amir will know what happened to Hassan and what Hassan did with his life after he left.
  • Amir's first novel.

    As said by Amir, "In the summer of 1988, six months before the soviets withdrew from Afghanistan, I finished my first novel..." (Hosseini 182). Amir's start as a writer is what his career is what pays for his family. Also, getting his novel published means that he remembers his past and he remembers Rahim Khan's letter of support.
  • The Soviet Union left Afghanistan

    As the author of the New York Times article "Afganistan- An Overview" said, "Eventually, after peace tralkes moderaeted by the United Nations, the last Soviet troops left Afghanistan in February 1989." (Afganistan- An Overview)
  • Soroya and Amir try to have a child.

    When Amir is thinking back to his past he says, "...1989... ...That was also the year that Soroya and I began trying to have a child," (Hosseini 184). Amir and Soroya's not being able to have a child is one of the reasons why Amir goes looking for Sohrab. Also, it is what pushes him to adopt Sohrab, because he does not yet have a child.
  • Sohrab is born.

    As Rahim Khan was telling Amir the story he said, "In early 1990, Farzana became pregnant again," (Hosseini 209). Farzana being pregnant means that Sohrab is now going to be born. Without Sohrab being born Amir would never have gone looking for him and would have never adopted him.
  • Sanaubar returns.

    Rahim Kahn said, "It was that same year, in the middle of summer, that a woman covered in a sky blue barqa knocked on the front gates one morning," ( Hosseini 209). The woman was Sanaubar, Hassan's mother. Hassan has not seen her his entire life, but now she returns when the country is falling apart. She cares for and pracitcally raises Sohrab and does her best to make up for lost time with Hassan.
  • The power of Afghanistan was anarchically divided

    As the author stated, "After Soviet forces departed, Afghanistan descended into vivious internecine strife; by the summer of 1994, power was anarchically divided among competing warlords and individual fiefdoms." (Afganistan- An Overview)
  • Mullah Omar now has 12,000 followers

    In the article "Afganistan- An Overview" the author states, "By the end of 1994 Mullah Omar had nearly 12,000 followers..." (Afganistan- An Overview)
  • The Taliban have taken control of Afghanistan

    AS the author of the article "Afganistan- An Overview" stated, "Buoyed by Pakistani aid, the Taliban by 1996 had taken control of Afghanistan..." (Afganistan- An Overview)
  • The Taliban are defeated.

    As stated by the author of the article "Afganistan- An Overview", "despite theire defeat in 2001, the Taliban continued to wage a guerilla warfare from a base in the mountainous and largely lawless tribal area on the Pakistan-Afghanistan border." (Afganistan- An Overview)
  • Rahim Khan is ill

    When Amir receives a phone call Soroya says, "'You look pale,' Soroya repeated... 'I have to go to Pakistan.' She stood up now. 'Pakistan?' 'Rahim Khan is very sick,'" (Hosseini 191). Rahim Khan is now sick and this causes Amir to return to the Middle East. Because of his return, he will learn about Hassan.
  • Amir and Sohrab come home.

    Amir said, "We arrived home about seven months ago, on a warm day in August 2001," (Hosseini 357). This quote is important because it tells us that Amir and Sohrab finally arrive back to America. It also signifys the start of Amir and Soroya's parenthood.
  • The 9/11 Bombing

    As said in the New York Times article, "Afghanistan- An Overview", The United States has been Militarily involved in Afghanistan since 2001, when it led an incasion after the Sept. 11 attacks bt Al Qaeda.
  • Hamid Karzai was named chairman of an interim govcernment that replaced the taliban.

    In the atricle "Afganistan- An Overview" the author states, "In December 2001, Hamid Karzai, a supporter and relative of Mohammad Zahir Shah, the exiled former king of Afghanistan, was named chairman of an interim government that replaced the defeated Taliban, making the leader of the country."   • Amir and Sohrab's kite run.

    Amir said, "Then, four days ago, on a cool rainy day in March 2002, a small, wonderous thing happened.... ... I looked down at Sohrab. One corner of his mouth had curled up just so. A smile," (Hosseini 370). After a year of not having Sohrab smile or talk, he finally smiles while kite running with Amir. The kite running brings back all of the memories of Amir's childhood and finally brings happiness to Sohrab.
  • President Obama decides to send 30,000 additional troops to Afghanistan

    As stated by the author, "In a speech deliver Dec. 2, 2009, at West Point, Mr. Obama announced his plan to deploy 30,000 additional troops." (Afganistan- An Overview)
  • Initial date where US troops were supposed to be evacuated from Afghanistan

    As the author said, "Though initial plans called for American combat forces to begin withdrawing form Afghanistan in the summer of 2011." (Afganistan- An Overview)
