Kite Runner & the History of Afghanistan

  • Becoming Himself

"I became what I am today at the age of twelve, on a frigid overcast day in the winter of 1975." (1) Amir foreshadows himself from where it was 2001, then he is throwing back. It shows that something important happened for him to become himself at such a young age
  • Neglected

"IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN just the two of us." This evidence explains the lost in Amir when Baba neglects him. He want to have that feeling of love that he desires
  • Friendship

"My clothes for the day were ironed and folded, left on the cane-seat chair in the foyer where Hassan usually did his ironing." It shows that even though Amir just witnessed Hassan being violated, he still cared about him and wanted Hassan to be safe
  • Power of fear

"He was afraid because he had no idea what Assef had in mind." The power of fear nestled in people can make them do things they never wanted to do but also to scare out demons that are in the ones they fear
  • Fear

"Even from where I was standing, I could see the fear creeping into Hassan's eyes" Fear is power. Causing the fear would be something assef did to try to get back at his victims (Hassan and Amir) so they knew never to hurt him again
  • Regretting

"The rest of my life might have turned out differently if I had. But I didn't. I just watched." Regretting not stepping in when Hassan was being violated placed a burden on Amir for the rest of his life. He keeps trying to atone for it but never succeds because he had the oppurtunity and it wasn't something as simple as saying "I'm sorry"
  • Devotion

"Nothing was free in this world. Maybe Hassan was the price I had to pay, the lamb I had to slay, to win Baba." Amir always tries to please Baba. However, many times he has to betray either Hassan or Ali to make sure that bond was still connected with Baba- that Amir was still Baba's son
  • Trying

"I lifted Hassan's mattress and planted my new watch and a handful of Afghani bills under it." After amir watched Hassan being violated, he ceased to hide his new watch and money underneath Hassna's bed as a oppurtunity to make Amir feel better about himself. Oviously failing, Hassan and Ali move out

  • New move

"Baba loved the idea of America." Baba and Amir m,ove away to get away from the Tsaliban rule and to stay safe in America. This switch makes a huge impact on both characters and their development
  • The reasons

"For me, America was a place to bury my memories.
For Baba, a place to mourn his." Amir was in America because Hassan and Ali and all of his bad mistakes were in Afghanistan. For Baba, Hassan and Ali along with the Taliban were in Afghanistan and he was upset to leave his family/friends.
  • Character development

"You were happier there, Baba. It was more like home, I said.
Peshawar was good for me. Not good for you." Baba adjusted easier in afghanistan because it's where he has lived and where he grew up. He knew everyone and everything and gave him the power.
  • Pride

"Amir is going to be a great writer, Baba said. I did a double take at this." Amir has never known praise from Baba so to hear the words of kindness and affection come from Baba, it surprises Amir.
  • Changes

"I want you to ask General Taheri for his daughter's hand." The changes in Amir went from him in Afghanistan, being very rude and only caring about himself to America when he lets go of his ego and manages to enjoy another person in his life.
