Kite Runner & the History of Afghanistan

  • The Invasion of the soviet Union

    The people of Afghanistan had not had much trouble until the invasion of the Soviet Union, "Afghanistan, officially the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, has known little peace since 1979, when the soviet Union invaded.

    The invasion started when, "The first Soviet troops parchuted into kabul on Dec. 27, 1979"

  • The intro to missiles

    Becuase the US was working with Afghanistan, we supplied them with weapons to defend themselves as it says in the NYT, "After 1986, the Soviet Air Force was also rendered largely useless by advanced Stinger antiaircraft missiles supplied by the United States to the rebels."
  • The Soviet Union Withdrawal

    After a long time of fighting, "Eventually, after peace talks moderated by the United Nations, the last Soviet troops left Afghanistan in February 1989, in what was in effect a unilateral withdrawal."
  • The rise of Omar

    Civilians and officials "began funneling arms, money and supplies to Mullah Omar's men, as well as military advisors to help guide tem in battle
  • The Taliban take over

    The Taliban had grown very powerful and "buoyed by the Pakistani aid, the Taliban by 1996 had taken control of afghanistan."
  • Hassan and Amir's friendship

    In the novel, Amir tightened the frienship between him and Hassan when he said, "There was a pomegranate tree near the entrance to the cemetary. One summer day, I used one of Ali's kitchen knives to carve our names on it: 'Amir and Hassan, the sultans of Kabul." (27) this event laid out the foundation for how strong a friendship they had when they were young and it signifies that Hassan was like a brother to Amir.
  • Amir's Talent of writing

    In the story Hassan exclaims, "That was the best story you've read to me in a long time." (30). Amir finds out that he is a good reader when Hassan likes his stoey he wrote. He takes this in mind and it leads him to his career and adds friction to his relationship with Baba.
  • The encounter with Assef

    When hassan stood up for Amir and himself Amir said, "I turned and came face to face with Hassan's slingshot.hassan had pulled the wide elastic band all the way back." (42) This was the beggining to Assef's longing to get Hassan back. Becuase Hassan threatened him, he made Assef take his son and make him pay.
  • The kite runner

    When Hassan goes to run a kite for Amir he says to him, "For you a thousand times over." (67) This shows how much Hassan loved and respected Amir. Throughout the book Amir goes back to what Hassan said and always regrets not being there for him in the end when he needed him most.
  • The kite tournament

    After a long and exciting kite tournament Amir said, "we were hopping up and down, both of us laughing, both of us weeping.'You won, Amir agha! You won!'" (66) this was a way for Amir to make Baba proud of him and he was counting on winning. After they won they were very happy and felt like they had accomplished somthing huge.
  • Hassan's breaking point.

    When Amir finally found Hassan he was "standing at the blind end of the alley in a defiant stance: fists curled, legs slightly apart. Behind hi, sitting on piles of scrap and rubble, was the blue kite. My key to Baba's heart."(71) This was a hard time for Amir becuase he really wanted to make Baba proud, but he also di not want to leave Hassan alone. This shows that Amir did not have good morals and was not a loyal friend becuase he chose to run away.
  • 911

    The Al Qaeda attacked the United States by highjacking two airplanes and running them into the twin Towers. The New York Times explains, "The United States has been militarily involved in Afghanistan since 2001, when it led an invasion after the Sept. 11 attacks by Al Qaeda."
  • The Taliban's Defeat.

    The Taliban had been torn apart and beat by the US, but "despite their defet in 2001, the Taliban continued to wage a guerrilla warfare from a base in the mountianous and largely lawless tribal are on the Pakistan-Afghanistan border.
  • Hassan's departure

    When Amir asked Baba if they would ever get new servents he responded with "Hassan's not going anywhere," Baba snapped. he dug a new hole with his shovel, striking the dirt harder then he had to." (90) Baba had hinted to us that he was connected to Hassan very strongley and he did not want to leave him. When Amir asked te question, Baba got very angry and told him to never say that again becuase Hassan was family.
  • Hassan showed his morals

    When Amir was jabbing at Hassan to throw a pomegranate at him, "Hassan did pick up a pomegranate. He walked toward me. He opened it and crushed it against his own forhead." (93) This shows that Hassan respected Amir too much to throw something at him and would rather do it to himself. Hassan's morals show and you can see how nice and loyal he is to Amir.
  • Hassan shows his status

    During Amir's birthday party Amir caught a glimpse of "Hassan serving drinks to Assef and Wali from a silver platter." (100) Ths shows how Assef has power over Hassan and he knows that Hassan will never bring up what he did to him. Hassan also can not get away from Assef no matter how hard he tries, he will always have to be nder him.
  • Hassan's Sacrifice

    Baba asked, "Did you steal that money? Did you steal Amir's watch, Hassan?... yes" (105) This was the last time that Hassan had to cover up for Amir. He knew he hadnt done it, but he also knew that Amir wanted him to leave and not come back so he said yes anyway.
  • Baba's adjustment

    After they moved to America, Baba was not happy when a store asked for his ID and he dhouted, "Almost two years we've bought his damn fruits and put money in his pocket and the son of a dg wants to see my license!" (127) Baba was not used to America's customs and and when someone asked for an ID, he was very upset that they didnt trust him. In Afghanistan, people knew him and they never needed any actual paper work or government stuff.
  • Baba's last job

    When baba was very sick and deathly, he had been asked to do one more fatherly thing for Amir, to ask for Soraya's hand. Amir said, "I drove away. In the review mirror, Bab was hobbling up the Taheris' driveway for one last fatherly duty." (163) Baba wanted to do one last thing for Amir so he decided to ask the General for Soraya's hand. It was something for him to do that was nice for Amir before he died and leave him something to remember.
  • Baba's Death

    After the wedding was over, Baba said, "There is no pain tonight.' 'Okay,' she said. She pulled up his blanket. We closed the door. Baba never woke up." (173) Baba had been such a huge part of Amir's life ad it was very sad when such a strong man died. This was the marker for when Amir grew up and did not need baba anymore to live and make decisions
  • Obamas Speech

    After a long war with Afghanistan, "Mr. Obama announced his plan to deploy 30,000 additional troops. He vowed to start bringing American forces home from Afghanistan in the middle of 2011."
  • Obama decides to send troops.

    Obama decided that he was going to take action in Afghanistan when "the Obama administration increasingly emphisizes the idea that the United States will have forces in the country until at least the end of 2014."
  • Baba adapting to America

    When they arrived to America, "Baba sold his Buick and bought a dilapidated ;71 volkswagen bus for $550." (137). This was a sign that Baba's power had changed when they moved. He used to have a fancy black Mustang but now he has a old bus which shows how much things have changed.
  • Amir's first love

    Soraya was the girl that Amir liked and he said she was his "Swap Meet Pricess. The morning sun to my yelda." (144) This was when Amir fisrt met Soraya and he was dazzled by her beauty. He knew instantly that he wanted to marry her and spend the rest of his life by her side.
