They went to Kabul in order to help Babrak Karmel (pres. of Afghan Communist leadership) According to Moscow, they only came because they heard a cry for help from the Karmal Government. However, many say that they went to Kabul to replace Afghan's ;eader, Hafizullah AMin.

    After this major event, George Bush gave demanded Taliban for custody of Osama Bin Laden. The Taliban didn't hand him over, so the US "joined forces" with rebel groups that didn't join the Taliban. Because of this, Taliban authority was ruled out of most Afghan cities soon after.

Although the White House favored him, the Afghans blamed him for corrupt officials and slow economic progress.
