Morocco wanted to gain control of Songhai's salt mines. When Morocco invaded, Songhai fell to Morocco.

In the 1300s Mansa Musa conquered Songhai, but in the 1400s Mali weakened. When the time was right, Songhai attacked and was able to get its freedom back. Songhai participated in the same trade routes that made Ghana and Mali rich.

In 1446, Sunni Ali became ruler of Songhai. He worked to strengthen and make the empire much larger.

Sunni Ali died in 1492. He was followed as king by his son Sunni Baru, who was not a Muslim. They rebelled against the king. The leader of the rebellion, Muhammad Ture (Askia The Great) then became the new ruler of Songhai. Askia supported education and under his rule. Askia also supported the growth of Islam. To help keep order, Askia split Songhai into 5 provinces, appointed new leaders, and created a professional army.
