Karl Popper

  • Karl Popper was born in Vienna, Austria.

Karl Popper was born into a wealth family with his father being a well paid lawyer. He described his father as more of a scholar than a lawyer. He owned a vast collection of books that was said to surmount to around 14,000 titles. That being said, it could seem that his father had somewhat of an influence on young Karl Popper. Karl Popper in his youth

Karl Popper described himself as somewhat of a "bookish" child and seemed to always had an interest in philosophy. Through out his younger years he would be thinking of all sorts of big questions, and around the age of 15, he would start to wonder about bigger questions such as the 'problem of essentialism'(5). University of Vienna

Right after the World War ended in October of 1918, Karl Popper enrolled into the University of Vienna. His political views during this time seem to sway a bit. "He embraced communism as a means to end the conflict". He also use to be a Marxist, but all this changed with time and events. He took 2 Matura exams becoming a fully matriculated student and passing the teacher-training college(9). Parvin, Philip. Karl Popper. Continuum, 2010, https://doi.org/10.5040/9781501301551.
  • Logik der Forschung

Published in 1934, the book Logik der Forschung gave Popper a new outlook on the foundations that science was built. "Popper proposed was nothing less than a reinterpretation of science not as an inductive process, but a deductive one" (Parvin 18). Parvin, Philip. Karl Popper. Continuum, 2010, https://doi.org/10.5040/9781501301551.
  • New Zealand

1937 Popper left Vienna and set his sights towards New Zealand. it was here he met a many great scholars, but Friedrich von Hayek would probably be the more important associate. You could say their meeting led to the making of Popper's paper 'The Poverty of Historicism'. This paper would discuss Popper's ideas on the book 'Logik der Forschung'. Parvin, Philip. Karl Popper. London School of Economics and Political Science

Starting in 1943 and for the next 23 years, Popper was granted the title Professor of Logic and Scientific Method. During this time he presented his essay 'The Open Society', diving into his thoughts on his political view. In 1965 he was Knighted and became Sir Karl Popper for his achievements. In the same year, the city of Vienna awarded him the Geisteswissenschaften prize, along with celebrating his 80th birthday.
  • The Death of Karl Popper

Karl Popper offered much on politics and for philosophy for science. The main one I enjoyed was his works on conducting science deductively. Confirming ones own theory instead of trying to disprove it, seems a little biased to me. How will one know his theory is truth if not willing to test it.
