    C. Columbus Lands in the New World
    Christopher Columbus was an Italian explorer working for the Spanish. He sailed to the New World thinking that he was in Asia. He thought that going West instead of East would create a new passage to Asia.

    The Spanish Borderlands

    The Spanish Borderlands
    Conquistadors found gold and silver in Mexico and Peru. They wanted it all. They wanted it all so the Spanish decided to settle there. Florida was one of the first Spanish settlements in the New World.

    The Seven Cities of Cibola

    The Seven Cities of Cibola
    The “Seven Cities of Cíbola”, Another legend sparked new Spanish expeditions into North America. An old European tale told of the “Seven Cities of Cíbola.” These cities were said to be so fabulously rich that the
    streets and houses were decorated with gold and jewels. When the Spanish heard Indians tell similar tales, they became convinced that the Seven Cities of Cíbola were somewhere in North America.

    New France
    In 1534 The French sent Jacques Cartier to explore the coastline of North America to find a passage to Asia, he failed. He claimed land we know today as Canada in the name of France. The first settlement in New France was founded by Samuel de Champlain in 1608. The French and The Natives were good business partners and traded lots of goods.
  • The Lost Conlony Roanoke

    The Lost Conlony Roanoke
    Sir Walter Raleigh an English nobelman tried to start a colony on Roanoke Island off the coast of now-day North Carolina. Settelers moved to Roanoke Island in search of gold however the NAtives of the area gave them fishing traps. Sir Raleigh sent another group of colonists Roanoke. Sadly they came too late and their leader John White went back to England to get for supplies. During this time England had a war with Spain in the New World. When White returned there was nobody there.
  • James Town

    James Town
    John Cabot was sent to establish Colonies in the New World. James Town was settled near water which was a perfect point for defence, the only bad thing was the mosquitos and they had no food. In the "starving time" of 1609 - 1610,the Jamestown settlers were in even worse straits. Only 61 of the 500 colonists survived the period. The English and the Natuves were not good friends but Pocahintas and John Smith were the solution to peace between the two sides.
  • Pennsylvania

    Pennsylvania
    In 1682 William Penn found land what he later called Pennsylvania. Pennsylvania is a place located in the middle with lots of shipbuilding. It is democratic and so takes no orders from England.
  • New Netherland

    New Netherland
    In 1624 The Dutch sent an english explorer Henry Huson to find a Northwest Passage that would lead to Asia. The Dutch and the Natives had a good relationship. An English man The Duke of York wanted the Dutch land and captured the Dutch governer Peter Stuyvesant. Then he called the land New York.
  • Claiming Louisiana

    Claiming Louisiana
    Father Marquette and Louis Joliet, explored the great Mississippi River. They hoped that this waterway would be the long-sought Northwest Passage. But they discovered that, instead of flowing west to the Pacific Ocean, the river flowed south toward the Gulf of Mexico. Disappointed, they returned to New France. Nine years later, Robert de La Salle explored the entire length of the Mississippi River. On April 9, 1682, he planted a French flag at the mouth of the river.
  • Proclamation of 1763

    Proclamation of 1763
    The British told colonists to stay on one side of the mountains becuase the Natives lived on the other side and the British could not afford another war (due to buying weapons, ammunition etc).
  • The Stamp Act

    The Stamp Act
    The British announced a new law, now you have to pay for a stamp on a piece of paper. This law was made becuase the British had debt to pay up from the French and Indian War.
  • The Quartering Act

    The Quartering Act
    British king sent soldiers to protect the colonists. The colonists would have to give these soldiers shelter, food, beer, etc etc.
  • The Townshend Acts

    The Townshend Acts
    British king made a law that colonists had to pay tax/duty for certain goods. This deeply increased the happiness of the colonists and a lot of colonists started to boycott the goods.
  • The Tea Act

    The Tea Act
    The British made a law stating that the colonists munst only buy tea from the East India Tea company. The tea was cheaper, tax was put on...but some didnt like it.
  • The Intolerable Acts

    The Intolerable Acts
    The British made new laws due to the recent behaviour of the colonists, the British sent more troops into the colonies to "keep an eye" on the colonists.
  • Lexington & Concord

    Lexington & Concord
    The British were told that the colonists were holding a huge stash or gunpowder and weapons and so the British decided to strike at once. A battle broke out between the colonists and the british and a lot were killed and injured.
  • The Battle of Bunker Hill

    The battle of Bunker Hill weakened the ties between the British and the colonists due to the colonists showing off their power. The colonists built a fort which worried the British which eventually turned into a battle. The colonists held the British back 3 times before their gunpowder ran out and the British took over. Over 1000 of the British were killed.
  • The Olive Branch Petition

    Before attacking the British the colonists sent a very nice letter to King George asking for freedom. Sadly the King did'nt like this very much. A war broke out.
  • The Seige of Boston.

    George Washington made a small army, took controll of a fort, got a lot of cannons, then frightened the British so much the Brits and loyalists fled to Canada.
  • Declaration of Independance

    On July 4th the delegates approved and signed a letter which formed The United States of America.
  • Battle For New York

    Battle For New York
    In Brooklyn, New York the American army and British army met for a battle. The Americans were no match for the Britsh because the British had more people and training. After the second day of fighting the British lost 377 men and the Americans lost 1,407. The Americans surrendered and that battle was one of the first American defeats
  • Trenton

    Trenton
    Washington and his army crossed the Delaware River in tiny boats, it was snowing and ice cold. This made Washington and his army's guns to wet to fire. When Washington and his army reached Trenton the enemy (Hessians) were enjoying a Christmas dinner. The Americans took them by suprise and Washington took 868 prisoners.

    The Articles of Confederation were laws made by the Continental Congress. The AoC made the central government have less power because they were afraid of having a "second British Empire".
  • Shay's Rebellion

    Shay's Rebellion
    Mr. Shay was thrown in a jail cell because he could not pay off his debt to the government. This was because during the war the farmers took care (made food) for the soldiers. THe farmers borrowed money from the government to supply the soldiers. Now since the war was over no soldier came to buy food so the farmers couldnt pay off. The government started seizing farmers land and throwing them in prison. This caused the farmers to burn down courthouses.
  • Constitutional Convention

    After the Articles of Confederation failed there was a converntion that made two planes, one was from Virginia and the other from New Jersey. Both did not succeed and instead a House of Representatives was made.
  • Ratification of the U.S. Constitution

    Ratification of the U.S. Constitution
    So the Constitution was made but still 9 colonies dis approved. The federal government wanted the delegates to vote for the constitution. The plan failed, the Ammendments were made. After that the constitution was still put in power by more than 9 votes.
  • Louisiana Purchase

    America bought the French land that in that time was called Louisiana for 15 million dollars. The main purchase America actually wanted to make was New Orleans which was a port for ships but France said "here take it all".
  • Spain Gives Florida To The US

    Andrew Jackson the American President invaded Flordia (at that time Spain) without permission. Spain did not want war so they gave Florida to America and honored them by having Texas.
  • The Indian Removal Act

    Andrew Jackson did not like Native's, he wanted them to move from their homes to another territry set up for only Native's. They were moved to what is now Oregon
  • The "Trail of Tears"

    The Cherokee Native's were sent from their home to Oregon where all of the Native tribes were sent under Andrew JAckson's orders. The trail going there was cold and long, it was called the Trail of Tears.
  • Annex of Texas

    Texas was Independant for 10 years and America wanted more land. America annexed Texas and the land was theirs
  • The Oregon Treaty

    Just like with Texas, America wanted to annex Oregon. This was not possible, Oregon was controlled by the British and Americsa did not want war again. Oregon was split in half.
  • War with Mexico

    After Texas was annexed America declared war on Mexico. After a whole lot of battles America and MExico signed a treaty. Mexico gave up half their land to America.
  • Issue that Upset the South

    The main issue that upset the South was that the North was trying to end slavery for them. The new president of the USA was Abraham Lincoln and he disliked slavery which made the South very angry
  • What Upset The Northerners

    The main issue that upset the Northerners was that the South still had slaves. These slaves were not treated like human beings and therefor then North wanted it to end, If every man was created equally then why would you "own" a slave. Slaves were considered property.
  • Second Issue that Upset the North

    The South had "removed" themselves from the USA and made their own "country", The North did not like this and still did not like the fact that the South would not give up slavery.
  • Second Issue that Upset the South

    John Brown attacked the arsenal at Harpers Ferry to get weapons for a slave rebellion. He took his five sons with him and attacked the Southern arsenal. He hoped that slaves would join him but he was wrong. He died, and so did his sons.
  • Start, end, and reasons for war

    The start of the cival war was becuase of the Slavery issue. The North hated it and the south loved it. The south was being selfsh and did not want slavery to end. A war broke out. A president was shot, Holy War attacks took place, and thousands of people were killed. When the war ended the North had won.
